Screen Gems’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter wasn’t able to secure a spot in the top three in its opening weekend as Fox’s Hidden Figures narrowly edged it out with an estimated $14 million as it has now topped $100 million domestically on a $25 million budget. As for Resident Evil, the film delivered an estimated $13.85 million from 3,104 theaters, the smallest opening for any film in the franchise, a distinction previously held by the original 2002 film which opened with $17.7 million.

Young Thug has been called “gay” for some years now. Acting nonchalantly, Thugger sort of played into the ambiguous allegations.
It’s a thoughtful gesture to make cookies for people. Not so much if you lace the cookies with weed.
That’s what a 74-year-old Indiana man is being charged with according to IndyStar.
Brian Jones was arrested in connection to the investigation that began last year, when several congregation members at the St. John’s the Apostle Catholic Church in Bloomington went to a local emergency room, reporting “adverse effects” after eating cookies brought by Jones after the 9:15 a.m. service, according to court documents.
Six congregation members told police they had eaten one of the cookies, with three reporting the cookies tasted “saltier” than normal. All six people tested positive for cannabinoids.
When interviewed by police, Jones said he made the cookies Saturday night and took them right to church on Sunday, he claimed to have no knowledge of the Cali-krypto-chronolite found inside.
Turns out, cops searched his crib and found a bottle of hash oil. BUSTED!

According to TMZ, Malia Obama is hard at work as an intern at the Weinstein Company and her input could be crucial to getting more black films in theaters.
Malia’s main duty is to read scripts and decide which ones should be pitched to the executive mucky-mucks in the office. Some of those scripts are written by Hollyweird’s elite and some by absolute nobodies. We can only hope that some amazing work by a black writer makes it to Malia’s desk and she finds them good enough to push up the ladder.
It is reported that Malia will make about $9/hour for her work.

Google does it again! Today’s homepage doodle is in honor of Edmonia Lewis, an African-American and Native American artist who was recognized around the world for her work as a sculptor.
There’s a link to more information about Lewis on the search engine’s homepage. There’s some really great stuff there. Lewis was the daughter of an African-American man and a Native American woman (Chippewa). She was born in 1844 (when slavery was still legal). She was fortunate to have been born free in New York and she even attended Oberlin College in Ohio in 1859 — but had to leave school prematurely after being accused of poisoning her white roommates. She was acquitted of those charges but was still assaulted by a mob of white vigilantes. After fleeing Ohio, her brother helped her move to Boston to study with sculptor Edward Brackett. While in Boston she began sculpting portraits of abolitionists — and through the sale of busts of abolitionist John Brown and Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, (the Civil War leader depicted in the film ‘Glory,’) Lewis funded her first trip to Europe in 1865. Lewis visited London, Paris, and Florence and eventually moved to Rome. She’s also known for sculpting scenes depicted in the Bible, poetry and historical stories — including her most famous work “The Death of Cleopatra,” which is on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in D.C.
The artist behind today’s doodle is Sophie Diao. Sophie has been designing Google Doodles for the past three and a half years. She is a 2013 graduate of the California Institute of the Arts where she majored in Character Animation. As she has always been inspired by both journalism and American History, she combines both interests to create.
“I started by researching Edmonia Lewis’ life story – how she got interested in sculpting and what her legacy was,” says Diao. “The fact that she intentionally chose to sculpt powerful female figures was exciting to me. I really wanted to show her in the process of sculpting, emphasizing her small stature (she was only four feet tall!) and one of her most famous pieces, ‘The Death of Cleopatra.’ I chose this piece to highlight in particular not only because it’s such a striking sculpture, but it depicts a female commander & Egyptian queen. I found her choice of subject matter extremely powerful. Her Native American name was “Wildfire,” which I tried to incorporate by making the Google letters especially fiery.”
Gotta love it. This woman was a real trailblazer.

On Saturday, Lifetime aired the RomCom “Love by the 10th Date,” with Kelly Rowland, Keri Hilson, Meagan Good, and Kellee Stewart. In the movie, Good and Stewart’s characters are trying hard to make it to “the elusive ’10th date,’ the Holy Grail in the dating world when women believe men are finally committed,” as the network explained. But in real like, Rowland and her husband Tim Witherspoon knew well before date 10 the love was real.
“He said he knew [he was in love] by the first date,” Rowland told ABC news. “I knew the third date. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I got nervous — to be completely honest — because I was like, this feels like my husband.”
For those who have seen the movie, you’ll remember that the fact Katherine Johnson, played by Taraji P. Henson, had to run half an hour just to use the Colored Ladies restroom was a huge part of the storyline. It affected her work, having to take hour long breaks just to walk back and forth from the restroom. And one day her boss, played by Kevin Costner, asked why she was often missing from her desk. After running an hour in the rain, Katherine, soaking wet, starts yelling as she explains that racism and segregation is the reason she’s missing in action so often.
In a grand and dramatic gesture, Kevin Costner, followed by a throng of people, takes a crowbar, treks the 30 minutes to the Colored restroom and bashes the sign until it falls to the ground. Once the sign has been forcibly removed, Costner looks at the crowd, which has increased since he first began, and says, “No more Colored restrooms. No more White restrooms…Here at NASA, we all pee the same color.”
It was over the top and powerful. It made a statement. And it was entirely false.
Akon has been quietly keeping his music career going and while overseeing his philanthropic efforts to bring electricity to Africa. The Senegalese-American singer came forth in a new video declaring President Donald Trump as “courageous” but did so as he blasted the former mogul for not having enough nuance in the position he now wields.
Akon took to a cell phone video picked up by TMZ to speak to his fans about President Trump’s tough-talking ways. In the clip, the singer suggests that former president Barack Obama was a far more gentle diplomat than the gun-slinging ways of America’s current leader. He added that while he thought Trump was the “most courageous president ever,” Akon stressed that there needs to be a different approach as it relates to foreign affairs.
It appears that Akon might have been inspired to speak on the president, this after the fiasco this weekend regarding the so-called “Muslim ban” executive order that has dominated the news cycle since the weekend.

NYDailyNews reports that the perpetually violent NBA baller turned himself into the NYPD to face charges that we previously reported on where he choked a woman and attacked her boyfriend inside Avenue night club.
The heavily tattooed, 36-year-old Sacramento Kings shooting guard turned himself in with attorney Alex Spiro in tow at the 10th Precinct in Chelsea at about noon, officials said.
He was charged with assault in the third degree — a misdemeanor — and received a desk appearance ticket after his short stay, officials said.
Ironically, Barnes was seen wearing a hoodie with the word “Reckless” emblazoned across the front.
Say his lawyer:
“He was issued a ticket,” Spiro told the Daily News. “We deny the allegations and will answer them in court.”
“Allegedly” choke a woman, punch a man, get a ticket. ‘Merica.

It was recently stolen from her and aired on national TV (“Love & Hip Hop NY season 7 episode 9) without her permission and after she specifically told the people trying to use it NO! They signed off on it anyway and have it on iTunes but didn’t pay a dime! They did the record over verbatim and changed the title from “95 Mase” to “98 Mase.”

A contrite Stevie J admitted in court that he hadn’t supported his two kids but insisted he was a changed man as a Manhattan Federal Court judge sentenced him to probation and restitution in his $1.3 million child support case.
Judge Paul Crotty sentenced the “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” star to three years probation and $1.3 million in restitution payments during his sentencing hearing Wednesday in Manhattan Federal Court.
“Your honor, I’m not what I was 20 years ago – the careless, reckless stubborn and cocky know it all,” a bespectacled Stevie, accompanied by his son and lawyers, told the judge. “I accept full responsibility for not fully financially supporting my children when I was younger.”
The producer, whose estranged partner Joseline just gave birth to their baby daughter, Bonnie, last month, said he has full custody of the kids, a son and a daughter, speaks to them everyday, attends his son’s basketball games and spends every holiday with them.
“But I’ve stepped up to the plate now and I fully support my children, not only financially, but they are the closest individuals to me,” Stevie said.
He said they both now work on his new show “Leave it to Stevie,” with him.
Stevie’s sentence doesn’t include prison time, a provision that the feds were gunning for. Before Wednesday’s sentencing, the feds asked the judge to throw the book at Stevie, asking for a prison term for up to six months, plus restitution of $1.3 million, while the Probation office asked for restitution payments, three years probation and a $2,500 fine, according to court papers obtained by BOSSIP, assistant U.S.
“While the government requests a custodial sentence, in my experience, that’s not merited,” Judge Crotty said. “Mr. Jordan, while there are some deficiencies, is in compliance. A custodial sentence is inappropriate.”
