Its starting to look like there may be no justice for Walter Scott, the unarmed black man gunned down by a white South Carolina cop. The jury remained deadlocked throughout Friday after all but one juror decided on a verdict for the officer Michael Slager, who shot a fleeing Scott in the back after a routine traffic stop and it was captured in video. In the recording, Scott can be seen running with some distance between himself and Slager, when Slager simply stopped, raised his gun, and fired five shots into Scott’s back.
“I still cannot without a reasonable doubt convict the defendant,” the conflicted juror eventually wrote, in a letter delivered to Judge Newman. “I cannot and will not change my mind,” he wrote. The message would provoke Slager’s defense to request that the judge rules the case a mistrial, but instead, he allotted for extra time and encouraged the panel to reach a verdict.
Slager faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted, the judge has also allowed for the jury to consider voluntary manslaughter should they fail to agree on the more serious charge.

In a statement provided to BuzzFeed News, Baltimore City Public Schools said, “Yesterday a middle school science teacher at Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School engaged in verbally abusive behavior and made racially charged comments directed at students. The teacher involved in the incident is no longer employed by City Schools.”
“At Baltimore City Public Schools, we are committed to creating positive and equitable learning environments in school communities where all members are welcome, supported, and valued,” the school board said in its statement. “No
form of discriminatory behavior of any kind is or will be tolerated.”

The Star Tribune reports that Luther conducted a national search last spring for a Santa to whom children of color would be able to relate. Santa Sid, who has worked at the Mall of America for 20 years, met Larry Jefferson of Irving, Texas, at a Santa convention in Branson, Mo. Of the 1,000 Santa impersonators in attendance, Jefferson was the only black one.
“It was like finding a needle in a haystack,” Luther said.
Jefferson, dressed as Santa Larry, will greet children, pass out candy and pose for photographs by appointment only from Thursday to Sunday.

With no experience in government or running a large bureaucracy, Mr. Carson, 65, publicly waffled over whether to join the administration. He will oversee an agency with a $47 billion budget, bringing to the job a philosophical opposition to government programs that encourage what he calls “dependency” and engage in “social engineering.”
He has no expertise in housing policy, but he did spend part of his childhood in public housing, said a close friend, Armstrong Williams, and he was raised by a dauntless mother with a grammar-school education. In his autobiography, he stressed that individual effort, not government programs, were the key to overcoming poverty.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development oversees programs that provide vouchers and other rental assistance for five million low-income families, fights urban blight and helps struggling homeowners stave off foreclosures.
