President Obama Talks GOP Voter Suppression Efforts At 2014 NAN Convention

Earlier today in New York City, President Obama took to the stage at the 2014 National Action Network Convention to address an intimate crowd of press, political peers, a handful of celebrity guests and a small group of lucky ticket holders. During his short and simple but fired-up speech the POTUS addressed the growing problem of voter suppression across the country in anticipation of the upcoming mid-term elections.

BOSSIP was in the building to hear the President speak and slam Republicans for openly making it more difficult to vote when they themselves are trying to gain votes. Check out a few excerpts from his speech below.

On certain groups of people (minorities, women, elderly, etc.) still having to fight for voting rights in the U.S.:
“This recent effort to restrict the vote has not been lead by both parties.   It’s been lead by the Republican party.  If your strategy depends on having fewer people showing up to vote, that’s not a sign of strength. That’s a sign of weakness. And not only is ultimately bad politics, ultimately it is bad for the country.”

You’d think this wouldn’t be an argument anymore, but the stark, simple truth is this: The right to vote is threatened today, in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago

Across the country, Republicans have led efforts to make it harder and harder for people to vote.”

On continuing to fight for equal voting rights:
“We’ve GOT to continue to press for equal voting rights. Every American that wants to vote should be able to vote.   The single most important thing we can do to protect our right to vote, is to vote.”

On being questioned about the validity of his birth certificate last year:
“Just to be clear, I do know where my birth certificate is (laughs). I think it’s still up on a website somewhere.

Do you guys remember that? That was crazy. I haven’t thought about that in a while.”

34-Year-Old Grandma Leaves 5 Kids Home Alone In Filth To Go Gambling

A trifling Florida woman was arrested earlier this week after her 4 children and 1 grandchild were found wandering the street asking for food when she left them alone in a filthy house to go to the casino.

A 34-year-old grandmother was arrested after police say she left her four kids and a grandchild while she went to the casino.

Crystal Hernandez, a relatively new resident of Pompano Beach, was ordered held on $5,000 bond. All five kids were taken away by officials, because of the condition of the home.

A neighbor called law enforcement officials when she found the five kids, ages 2 to 12, walking around asking for food, according to the legal complaint.

She was arrested at her home at 9:23 p.m. Tuesday. Police said she didn’t appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew McGee said the smell of urine and feces in the house was overwhelming, and “almost unbearable to stand,” he wrote in his report.

In court Wednesday, Broward Judge John “Jay” Hurley told Hernandez that McGee found “feces on the kitchen counter, along with feces on the floor.”

“Huh-uh,” she said, shaking her head in disagreement.

McGee’s report said that “dirty clothes were thrown around the residence, along with old food.”

The cupboards contained no food, he said, and there was “minimal” food in the refrigerator.

Because of that, the children were all removed from the home by BSO’s Child Protective Investigations Section.

Hernandez lives in southwest Pompano Beach and moved there about three months ago, Hurley said.

She was charged with five felony counts of child neglect without great harm.

There are waaaaay too many unanswered questions in this story. Who leaves 5 kids home alone in the house with NO food? Why are they living in feces?? What a mess.

Bullied Student Charged With Felony Wiretapping Of Abusive Peers

After being regularly shoved and tripped, and nearly burned with a cigarette lighter, a tormented special-needs student in Pennsylvania decided to take matters into his own hands. He secretly recorded the abuse on his school-issued iPad, and his mother eventually submitted the evidence to the school’s principal. But instead of punishing the teenage tyrants caught on tape, administrators decided to call the police, who threatened the 15-year-old boy with felony wiretapping, but later reduced the charge to disorderly conduct. He was found guilty on March 19. This isn’t the first time that developmentally disabled kids have covertly recorded bullying on school grounds, but it’s the first case where the victim has been criminally convicted for doing so. At least nine such incidents occurred across the country between 2003 and 2013, often resulting in the firing of school employees, the expulsion of students and legal settlements worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. And while it shouldn’t make much of a difference, previous incidents have mostly involved parents slipping discreet spyware into their children’s pockets, rather than the child taking action. In 2011, an Ohio couple received $300,000 after they secretly taped teachers verbally abusing their 14-year-old disabled daughter with remarks like “It’s no wonder you don’t have friends,” and in 2012, a New Jersey father posted an audio clip on YouTube of his 10-year-old autistic son getting called “a bastard” by a classroom aide. The Pennsylvania student, a sophomore who remained unnamed in a report on BenSwann.com, was previously diagnosed with comprehension-delay disorder, anxiety disorder and ADHD. In his testimony, he claimed that he decided to record the incident in order to show his mother that he “wasn’t lying” about the ongoing abuse. “I was really having things like books slammed upside my head,” he said. “I wanted it to stop. I just felt like nothing was being done.” The original recording was suspiciously deleted by school authorities, though as described on BenSwann.com, the boy’s mother, Shea Love, recounted it during the hearing. According to Love, as the teacher is heard attempting to help her son with a math problem, a student says, “You should pull his pants down!” Another student replies, “No, man. Imagine how bad that (c**t) smells! No one wants to smell that (t**t).” As the recording continues, the teacher instructs the classroom that they may only talk if it pertains to math. Shortly thereafter, a loud noise is heard on the recording, which her son explained was a book being slammed down next to him after a student pretended to hit him in the head with it. When the teacher yells, the student exclaims, “What? I was just trying to scare him!” A group of boys are heard laughing.

After listening to her son’s evidence, Love eventually reported it to the South Fayette High School principal who, instead of disciplining the bullies involved, called the police to interrogate her “visibly distraught” son. When Love arrived, the principal said the student was facing felony wiretapping charges because he had made a recording in a place where there is an expectation of privacy. The officer agreed but eventually reduced the charge to disorderly conduct on the basis that the student engaged in offensive actions “which served no legitimate purpose.” Recording laws vary from state to state, but Pennsylvania is one of just 12 states that require the consent of all parties involved. In the remaining states, consent is not mandatory as long as the person recording is present during the conversation. Despite his emotional testimony and his mother’s pleas, the Pennsylvania student was eventually found guilty, though he plans to appeal the ruling during his next court appearance on April 29. The bullies were never punished.

9-Month-Old Baby Boy Charged With Attempted Murder Released From Prison

A baby murder suspect has been released and freed after police withdrew charges against the nine month-old boy who, although unable to enter a plea, gurgled throughout various court hearings.

The justice system in Pakistan has been held up to ridicule after a nine-month-old baby was arrested and charged with murder and police harassment in relation to a workers’ dispute.

The saga has now come to an end, with the dropping of all charges against the baby who is still weaning.

At a previous court hearing, at which the child appeared, the judge refused to drop the charges and only international pressure and abject embarrassment forced the local police to admit their mistake and drop the case.

The child’s lawyer Irfan Tarar said the decision was made after an admission that the original charges were invalid because the police had failed to investigate them, AP wire services reported.

The nine-month-old baby boy was originally charged with willful murder, resisting arrest, threatening police and interfering in state affairs, but seemed blissfully unaware in court as he sucked on a bottle of milk on his father’s lap.

The child, who was apparently unaware that he has made world criminal history as the youngest ever murder suspect, was arrested by Pakistani Police in a raid involving at least 30 other suspects in a move, which observers suggest, is not their justice system’s finest hour.

Unable to enter a plea, there were some gurgles from the baby during the initial arraignment.

The super ‘baby villain’, Muhammad Mosa Khan, was charged two weeks ago as part of a raid on suspected gas thieves in the city of Lahore, The Times of India reported.

Police accused ‘Mosa’, his father and others of throwing stones at security guards in what others claim was a protest against shortages of electricity in the city.

Police say the suspects tried to kill security officers by throwing stones at them. But Khan’s father, Ahmed – who is also accused – said the crowd was protesting an electricity shortage.

His lawyer said that they were relieved that the ordeal was over.

Thank you, Pakistan. This story essentially confirms the US perception of you and your citizens. WTF?!?

Woman Blackmailed Into Prostitution By Roommate

She had the roommate from hell. What a horrible thing to do to someone.

According to CBC News:

Calgary police have charged a woman with human trafficking after she allegedly extorted her female roommate into working in the sex trade.

Police began an investigation in January after receiving a request from a family member to check on the welfare of the 18-year-old alleged victim, who was believed to be in Calgary.

Shortly after, officers located the woman at a bus station. She told police she had been held against her will and forced to work in the sex trade since the fall.

It’s believed the woman arrived in Calgary in October 2013 for a job and was looking for a female roommate.

She met a woman, Amanda Kathleen McGee, who offered her inexpensive rent, which she accepted.

After a short time living together, it’s alleged the 31-year-old woman began slipping drugs into the alcoholic drinks the two were consuming together.

Police say the woman then allegedly took inappropriate photos of the 18-year-old without her knowledge and later used those photos to extort her into participating in sex acts for money. The teen alleges she was told the photos would be shared with family and friends if she didn’t comply.

McGee will appear in court on April 15.

Thank God her family sent someone to check on her.

Common Announces Job Initiative Program And Youth Music Festival

Lawd knows, with all the violence in Chi-Raq, the city needs some uplifting.

According to Rolling Out:

This past Wednesday (April 9) hip-hop artist, actor and philanthropist, Common held a press conference to announce his foundation’s alliance with Donda’s House Inc., and the Chicago Urban league to create a jobs initiative program and music festival created specifically for the youth of Chicago.

“If people feel that they have the capability to help, they should look and see what the need is and serve that. We’re trying to do that here,” Common says.

Andrea Zopp, CEO of the Chicago Urban League adds “It’s one thing to provide summer jobs for these kids, but we’re trying to provide year-round jobs. We’ve had hearings and the kids have told us that they need jobs year-round.”

Chicago rap artist and activist Che “Rhymefest” Smith, co-founder of Donda’s House, says that all the kids of Chicago need are opportunities.

“If kids have opportunities to make good money legally, it might dissuade them from turning to crime,” says the rapper affectionately known as ‘fest. “Our generation [African Americans in their late twenties and thirties] always talk about how the previous generation failed us and now it’s our turn to succeed for our youth. This collaboration isn’t about Kanye West, Common, Lupe Fiasco, or anyone. It’s about necessity.”

The jobs initiative’s goal is create 20,000 jobs for the city’s youth.
