A jail inmate suffered a painful six-day erection that cost him his sexual virility after jail doctors failed to send him to the hospital for treatment, according to a lawsuit.
Rodney Cotton, who was in the Manhattan Detention Complex in 2011 for violating parole, had priapism — a painful, constant erection caused by his antidepressant medication — according to a lawsuit filed in August 2011 in State Supreme Court.
Cotton, 51, was left alone and crying in his solitary cell without proper help for six days, he said.
Contrary to standard practice, jail doctors did not send him to the hospital until he required surgery and was rendered impotent, the lawsuit said.
“I have to readjust my manhood,” Cotton told DNAinfo New York. “I have to readjust myself because I’m not even whole.”

Cotton went into Manhattan Detention Complex on June 21 on a parole violation after flipping over a cart at a halfway house where he was living, he said. He had been living there for a few months after spending two and a half years in Attica for illegally possessing Vicodin in 2008, he said.
Cotton had been at MDC for three weeks when the painful erection began, according to his lawyers. Extended, painful erections are a known, but uncommon, side-effect of Risperdal, a drug Cotton was using to treat depression.
After his erection would not go away for hours on July 4, 2011, Cotton asked to be taken to the jail clinic, but a guard initially told him it was not an emergency and he would have to wait until after the Independence Day holiday weekend, according to the lawsuit.
In order to get seen, Cotton told the guard he had chest pains, he said.
The first doctor he saw, Dr. Craig Metroka, gave him Tylenol and ice packs instead of sending him to the hospital, according to documents. The second, Dr. Landis Barnes, gave him the same treatment the next day, the lawsuit says.
Hopefully the money Mr. Cotton will receive from his lawsuit will help him get back up…

So Sad: Man Jailed For Years At Rikers Island Without Conviction Commits Suicide
Kalief Browder Commits Suicide
Kalief Browder, the man who spent three years at Rikers Island as a teen and endured abuse from inmates and prison guards, has committed suicide.
The 21-year-old who was never convicted of a crime and whose story touched numerous celebs including Jay Z, hung himself Saturday in New York.
The New York Daily News reports:
A Bronx man who spent three years as a teen in Rikers Island enduring beatings by guards and inmates and long stints in solitary confinement without ever being convicted has committed suicide.
Kalief Browder, 21, used an air-conditioning cord to hang himself Saturday at his family’s Bronx home, according to the New Yorker magazine.
“Ma, I can’t take it anymore,” Browder told his mother the night before he took his life.
Browder became a cause célèbre, garnering support from rapper Jay Z and talk-show host Rosie O’Donnell, after his torturous stint at Rikers was exposed.
His case prompted Mayor de Blasio to reform the scandal-plague city jail to stop solitary confinement for 16- and 17-year-old inmates.
“This case is bigger than Michael Brown,” Browder’s lawyer, Paul Prestia, told the New Yorker, referring to the unarmed black Missouri teen whose shooting death by a white cop in August 2014 sparked national protests.
“When you go over the three years that he spent (in jail) and all the horrific details he endured, it’s unbelievable that this could happen to a teen-ager in New York City,” Prestia said. “He didn’t get tortured in some prison camp in another country. It was right here!”
In May 2010, cops arrested Browder on Arthur Ave. in the Bronx after a teen accused him of robbing him of his backpack.
His family was unable to raise his $10,000 bail, so Browder remained locked up in Rikers awaiting trial.
He was offered a plea deal after 33 months, which he refused.
As months turned into years, the stress got to Browder and he attempted suicide several times.
Browder spent more than 400 days in solitary confinement.
He was released from Rikers in May 2013 when charges were dropped.
In April, shocking Rikers security footage from September 2012 surfaced showing a correction officer slamming Browder to a cellblock floor and pummeling him. Other footage from 2010, showed Browder being beaten by 10 teen inmates in a wild brawl.
So sad. R.I.P. Kalief.
