Local history was made Saturday when one high school in Connecticut crowned a gay, male student as Prom Queen — a recognition he says sends a strong message against transphobia.

Students at Danbury High School decided to make a statement at this year’s senior prom by electing 17-year-old Nasir Fleming to win the title of Prom Queen. Fleming — who is not transgender himself — uploaded a video of his crowning ceremony to You Tube and described the moment as one that sheds light on the LGBT community and some of the barriers they face.
“Even though I identify as male, winning this title is a statement against transphobia,” he wrote on You Tube. “As gay people, more or less, are becoming accepted in society, transgendered people are still discriminated against severely.”
Fleming’s classmates originally hoped the teen would earn the recognition of both Prom King and Queen, but Fleming eventually chose to reign as Prom Queen in an effort to bring further awareness to the transgender community, reports White Plains Patch.
“If I can win a title that is outside of my gender, there is no reason why a trans-person should have any problems winning titles in his/her gender (Prom Queen, Miss America, etc). Stop the hate, start the love,” Fleming wrote.
As for the title of Prom King, that recognition went to a student named Rohit Das who offered to dance with Fleming after the two were crowned — but both Das and Fleming ended up bringing in the traditional dance with their respective dates.
“To be able to say, ‘Even though I’m straight and like girls, I’m willing to dance with a gay guy at the prom’ is huge,” Fleming said.
Fleming’s video on You Tube has received over 50,000 views thus far — along with several comments criticizing the young teen and his recent crowning.
To his critics, Fleming says: “I’m flattered. I consider myself the king — or queen — of controversy. They can say what they want, so long as they’re watching.”
According to the Danbury News-Times, Fleming will attend Manhattanville College, in Purchase, N.Y., in the fall.

While authorities are trying to keep track of a San Francisco woman who was breeding rats in her room at a residential hotel and releasing them in public parks, they say their hands are tied as far as trying to stop her.
She’s been nicknamed “Rat Girl” by the people who’ve followed her behavior over the years. But officials told KTVU the situation is no laughing matter because her affection for rats could endanger her health and the health of the San Francisco public.
KTVU on Thursday obtained video shot in April of 2011 of a room in a Minna Street SRO hotel packed with piles of filthy clothes, a dirty mattress and dozens of rats, burrowing in and out of the debris.
Animal Care and Control officials say the then-resident — a 43 year-old woman known as “Erica J.” — bred hundreds of rats in the room. San Francisco’s Public Health Department told KTVU that by the end of May, 2011, it had exterminated a thousand rats in the room and neighboring areas.
“The rats have actually burrowed into other people’s rooms. They can carry disease, they can carry parasites,” said Animal Care & Control Captain Denise Bongiovanni. “I was immediately concerned for the well-being of Erica. I believe that there’s a serious underlying mental health issue that needs to be addressed and it seems to be unresolved.”
Bongiovanni said that in the last three years, Erica J’s social worker, landlords and members of the public have reported her for breeding the rodents.
At one point, Bongiovanni said Erica J. lived under a Japantown pedestrian bridge and brought her rats with her.
“She had the rats living off of a cart and apparently some of them had escaped and were burrowing into an area near a pedestrian bridge,” said Bongiovanni. “Our officer went out and tried to locate them and tried to collect them, but was unable to at the time.”The latest incident happened May 8th. Bongiovanni said a passerby reported Erica J. was living with at least eight rats in a park at Golden Gate Avenue and Steiner Street. Video obtained by KTVU shows rats eating out of a plastic bowl filled with dog food.
“The officer that responded noted that they had been there for some time. They had actually sort of dug a maze and had areas to tunnel and burrow,” said Bongiovanni. “We collected seven, unfortunately I believe one of them was really sick and died in transport. We impounded the rest.”
Bongiovanni said the department has been able to adopt out some of Erica J.’s domesticated rats over the years. Sick and feral ones have either been euthanized or exterminated. Bongiovanni said the woman has surrendered some animals but suspects she hides others.
“She has come across as being very anxious and always concerned that she could keep a couple of rats,” said Bongiovanni.Animal Care & Control Department head Rebecca Katz told KTVU her department often has trouble tracking down Erica J. and said prosecuting her under the municipal code is unlikely to solve the problem. Bongiovanni said the woman needs treatment to prevent her behavior from harming herself, others and the rats.
“We understand that Erica has housing again in the city and I can only imagine that this situation is probably going to continue wherever she lives until she gets the help that she needs,” said Bongiovanni.

A Republican who twice tried — and twice failed — to be elected has changed his name from “Scott Fistler” to “Cesar Chavez,” his party affiliation from GOP to Democrat, and just filed to run for Congress in a heavily Hispanic district.
Much like Dave Wilson, the white anti-LGBT activist in Houston, Texas who used stock images of African-Americans in his campaign literature to deceive low-information voters about his race, Chavez is trying to convince voters in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District that he shares a common cultural and racial heritage with them.
His official campaign website is cluttered with images of excited people cheering for “Chavez” — the majority of which come from news reports about former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
The Arizona Capitol Times contacted Chavez for comment, but he claimed his office was too “flooded with calls and emails” for him to substantively reply.
“There is just simply not enough Cesar Chavez to go around,” he wrote. “We may resume questions starting May 10th.”
SMH.
Mary Rose Wilcox, another Democrat candidate looking to represent Arizona’s 7th District, told the Capitol Times that she “thinks that’s really poor taste.”
“My husband and I grew up under the leadership of Cesar Chavez (the labor leader) and he means so much to our community,” she said. “Voters aren’t going to be fooled. If he thinks he can fool them, it’s a real affront to the community. He should be ashamed.”
Arizona Democratic Party chairman DJ Quinlan told the Capital Times that Chavez is “trying to make a mockery of the system, or of Democrats, or of the Hispanic community.”
Seems like some of these GOP muhfuggas care more about “winning” than actually helping people.
