White Woman Is Mad Black Woman Joined Her Yoga Class

Jen Caron, a self-described “skinny white girl,” enjoys yoga. Or she did, at least—until a harrowing experience which can be accurately described as, “There was a new person at yoga, and that person was black.”

A few weeks ago, as I settled into an exceptionally crowded midday class, a young, fairly heavy black woman put her mat down directly behind mine. It appeared she had never set foot in a yoga studio—she was glancing around anxiously, adjusting her clothes, looking wide-eyed and nervous. Within the first few minutes of gentle warm-up stretches, I saw the fear in her eyes snowball, turning into panic and then despair. Before we made it into our first downward dog, she had crouched down on her elbows and knees, head lowered close to the ground, trapped and vulnerable. She stayed there, staring, for the rest of the class.

Because I was directly in front of her, I had no choice but to look straight at her every time my head was upside down (roughly once a minute). I’ve seen people freeze or give up in yoga classes many times, and it’s a sad thing, but as a student there’s nothing you can do about it. At that moment, though, I found it impossible to stop thinking about this woman. Even when I wasn’t positioned to stare directly at her, I knew she was still staring directly at me. Over the course of the next hour, I watched as her despair turned into resentment and then contempt. I felt it all directed toward me and my body.

Imagine: there you are, in yoga class, when all of a sudden, directly behind you, you sense a fairly heavy black woman who you can feel directing resentment directly at your body. Reality—or nightmare?

I was completely unable to focus on my practice, instead feeling hyper-aware of my high-waisted bike shorts, my tastefully tacky sports bra, my well-versedness in these poses that I have been in hundreds of times. My skinny white girl body. Surely this woman was noticing all of these things and judging me for them, stereotyping me, resenting me—or so I imagined…

I realized with horror that despite the all-inclusivity preached by the studio, despite the purported blindness to socioeconomic status, despite the sizeable population of regular Asian students, black students were few and far between.

To bring you up to speed, if you’re just joining us: Jen Caron went to yoga class. Behind her in yoga class was someone new to yoga. That person, who was black and female, was not skilled at yoga. Their presence made Jen Caron painfully self-aware. And then came the true enlightenment…

I thought about how that must feel: to be a heavyset black woman entering for the first time a system that by all accounts seems unable to accommodate her body. What could I do to help her?

Oh no.

If I were her, I thought, I would want as little attention to be drawn to my despair as possible—I would not want anyone to look at me or notice me. And so I tried to very deliberately avoid looking in her direction each time I was in downward dog, but I could feel her hostility just the same…. If I asked her to articulate her experience to me so I could just listen, would she be at all interested in telling me about it?

I got home from that class and promptly broke down crying. Yoga, a beloved safe space that has helped me through many dark moments in over six years of practice, suddenly felt deeply suspect. Knowing fully well that one hour of perhaps self-importantly believing myself to be the deserving target of a racially charged anger is nothing, is largely my own psychological projection, is a drop in the bucket, is the tip of the iceberg in American race relations, I was shaken by it all the same.

So basically, a black woman joined her yoga class and this privileged white woman self-imploded. The end.

Millionaire Asks Ex-Wife To Work As His Maid When He Remarries

A businessman who carried on living with his former wife after they divorced asked her if she would stay on as his housekeeper when he installed another woman in the home, a High Court judge was told.

The man could not understand why his former wife became “so aggressive” when he informed her of the new arrangements, the court heard.

On Wednesday Mr Justice Bodey ruled that she was entitled to nearly half of her former husband’s £13.6 million fortune.

The Family Division of the High Court, heard that the couple, who cannot be named and are from London, married in the late 1970s and divorced in the 1990s.

The judge said they treated the divorce as “just a piece of paper” and carried on living together.

Bad move, playa.

About five years ago the man, who is in his 70s, met another woman.

“The husband installed the other woman and her 12-year-old daughter into the marital home,” said Mr Justice Bodey.

When the man asked his former wife, who is in her 50s, if she would remain in the home “as some sort of housekeeper”, she found the suggestion “very demeaning and upsetting”.

The man told her that he would “commit suicide or go on hunger strike” if she “went to court regarding financial matters”.

This guy is dedicated ladies and gentlemen, he would rather DIE than to give his wife a dime more than what they had already agreed upon.

A word of advice though, the phrase “It’s cheaper to keep her” applies to wives, not housekeeper.

HIV/AIDS Signs Warn People Not To Have Sex With Black Men

Several flyers propagating a racist message circulated along Jefferson Road this weekend. The flyers, which were identified as the work of the white supremacist group, the National Alliance, defiled African Americans in accusations of deli- berately spreading HIV and AIDS.

“Don’t Have Sex With Blacks, Avoid Aids,” read some of the text on the flyers. The flyers picture three black men saying that they lied about their HIV status and “had sex with dozens of white women.”

The National Alliance, whose Denver chapter appeared on the bottom of the flyers, has been responsible for propagating hate propaganda in the past. The same group had sent anti-Semitic propaganda throughout Princeton Township last June.

The flyers also printed the telephone number of the New Jersey chapter in Hewitt.

Borough Police are currently investigating the incident as a littering offense, because the text and message are protected by the First Amendment, Borough Police Capt. Anthony Federico said. He went on to say that the incident has not gained the complaint that would elevate it to a bias crime.

The National Alliance entered area politics in July when Hopewell Borough Councilman Marc Moran admitted that he was a member of the group. Mr. Moran’s association with the National Alliance was made public after it was discovered that he had posted lengthy essays on white supremacy on the organization’s website. He described himself as racially aware, but “not a racist.”

At the time, many elected representatives in the area called for Mr. Moran’s resignation, citing that his personal beliefs were not in concert with the beliefs of his constituency. Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, whose 15th District includes Hopewell Borough, issued a direct indictment of Mr. Moran’s beliefs.

“The appointment of Marc Moran is an insult to the close-knit families of Hopewell Borough and the surrounding communities,” said Mr. Gusciora. “His admittedly bigoted views toward immigrants, mixed-race couples, Jews, and gays have no place in the public-policy arena,” he said.

Mr. Moran subsequently left Hopewell government and quit the National Alliance. Borough Mayor Marvin Reed voiced his concern over the incident.

“We all think it’s horrendous,” he said. The mayor added that while the text of the flyers is protected by free speech provisions of the First Amendment, it is important that the distributor is identified.

“If people distribute this sort of thing, other people ought to know who they are,” the mayor said.

Wives And Girlfriends Of The Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is this weekend, and there will be plenty of thirsty women around. But they should all know about these guys who are booed up and they should stay away from. Here are the wives and girlfriends of the players for the big game.

This is crazy. A Canadian woman ended up dead during her commute Thursday after her scarf became tangled in the escalator she was riding.

According to NY Daily News reports:

A woman was killed during rush hour in Montreal Thursday when her scarf and hair got caught in a subway escalator, authorities said.

The 48-year-old woman was riding down the escalator at the Fabre metro station in the Villeray neighborhood shortly after 9:00 a.m. when her scarf got snagged, police said.

When she bent down to pull her it out, her hair got stuck, authorities said.

Bystanders rushed to try to free the stricken rider, but she eventually lost consciousness.

“By the time our people arrived, it had stopped and she was at the bottom of the escalator,” Bob Lamle, a chief of Urgences-sante, Montreal’s emergency response agency, told reporters Thursday.

“She was lying on her back,” he said. “The woman was in cardiac arrest.”

Paramedics worked to revive the woman, but could not. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body was taken to the city coroner’s office, where an autopsy would determine the official cause of death, authorities said.

She has not been identified.

Lamle said he’d never seen such an accident in 30 years on the job.

“We see accidents in escalators, but I don’t recall a situation like this where somebody was physically trapped in the mechanism,” he said, according to the Toronto Star.

A spokesman for Montreal’s transit authority told the CBC that the escalators at the station, which is on the Metro system’s Blue Line, were up to code.

The southwest entrance to the Fabre station was closed until 2 p.m. Thursday, and the escalator was to be shut down until safety checks were completed, an agency spokesperson said.

So sad. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Toni Braxton Buys $3 Million Calabasas Home

From the alleged Justin Bieber egging to Kourtney Kardashian’s listing and Willie McGinest hawking land, the celebrity hotbed of Calabasas, CA never fails to disappoint when it comes to juicy real estate gossip.

The latest rumor? Toni Braxton is reported to have purchased a home in the exclusive, star-studded community. Take it as you will, but TMZ (via Huffington Post) is reporting that the formerly bankrupt singer has made a multimillion-dollar purchase in the same gated enclave as Bieber.

Braxton is said to have paid $3 million for the home found six houses down from the troubled pop star in the Estates of the Oaks. At first glance, that kind of move seems rather odd considering the Grammy Award-winning artist is just six months removed from settling her bankruptcy case, in which she claimed to have debt between $10 million and $50 million. Then again, there’s always a chance that Braxton clawed her way out of the red, especially with her reality show “Braxton Family Values” currently riding high in its third season.

Property records show that the home in question was listed for sale in March 2013 for roughly $3 million and showed a status of “Backup Offer” in December before being pulled from market. A French Country-inspired affair, it has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and 5,323 square feet of living space.

Lined with designer finishes, the home features wood flooring, beamed ceilings and various custom built-ins throughout. A gourmet kitchen has a large center island and top-of-the-line appliances, and the master suite comes complete with a private sitting area, a fireplace, dual walk-in closets and a spa-like bath.

Outside, the grounds feature a private courtyard area with an outdoor fireplace, a pool with a spa, a loggia, various water features and rolling green lawns.

This won’t end well…

That southern snowstorm was pretty deadly this week, but at least one life was saved by this doctor’s bravery!

According to PEOPLE.com reports:

As winter weather shut down highways and crippled portions of the South, one Alabama neurosurgeon made a heroic decision Tuesday not to let Mother Nature get in the way of life-saving treatment.

Dr. Zenko Hrynkiw, a 62-year-old brain surgeon (who has had a liver transplant), was working in Birmingham’s Brookwood Medical Center when he was contacted by another hospital. There, a patient was desperate for emergency surgery for a traumatic brain injury.

Hrynkiw set off across town to operate, but his vehicle could only go so far in traffic and snow-stalled roads. His cell phone service went in and out as he tried to communicate with nurses. So he made a brave decision to get out and walk – for more than six miles, in a massive snowstorm – a feat that has earned praise at Trinity Medical Center where he operated, as a hero, NBC reported.

“He had a 90 percent chance of death, and the nurses and the ER physicians called me when I was walking and told me he was deteriorated and went into unconsciousness,” Hrynkiw told the Associated Press about the desperate patient. “He was dying. If he didn’t have surgery, he would be dead. It’s not going to happen on my watch.”

The determined physician made it to the operating room and his patient, according to the hospital, is now doing well.

“It was not just a walk in the park,” Keith Granger, CEO of Trinity, told Alabama news site AI.com. Given what the doctor was up against, “it’s a remarkable physical feat and mental feat. And we have an individual alive today who wouldn’t be here if not for his efforts.”

Thank God he made it in time and wasn’t hurt himself! This story should give us all a little more faith in humanity.

Justin Bieber’s Plane Held On Pot Suspicion

Justin Bieber’s personal plane — headed to New Jersey for the Super Bowl — was held at Teterboro Airport on Friday afternoon under suspicion it was carrying marijuana, law enforcement sources said.

The plane had just arrived at 2:53 p.m. from Toronto when authorities detected what was described as a strong odor of pot.

The plane, believed to be a twin-jet Raytheon Hawker 800, was ordered held until drug-sniffing dogs could check it out.

It was not clear if Bieber was aboard. The singer planned to fly from his native Canada so he could take in the Super Bowl and pre-game festivities.

The incident comes after Toronto authorities decided to charge the 19-year-old Bieber with assault on Wednesday.

He is already facing a driving-under-the-influence case in Miami and remains under investigation for felony vandalism in Los Angeles.

Elderly Woman Gets Hand Stuck In Truck Hood For 18 Hours

This woman will certainly have a story to tell after this ordeal.

A woman in her 70s is recovering in a Portland, Ore. hospital after getting her hand trapped underneath the hood of her pickup truck, forcing her to stand in harsh weather overnight.

The grueling accident started Wednesday afternoon when the woman was hooking up a charger to the battery of her truck near her home in Molalla, Ore.

The hood slammed down on her hand and clicked the latch, making it impossible to remove her arm, KPHO-TV reported.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was unable to sit down and spent 18 hours exposed to rain and snow. At one point, she jogged in place just to stay warm.

She screamed for help all night long, but no one her heard cries until the next day when some neighbors rode through the area on horseback, KATU-TV reported.

Poor thang. Thank goodness she made it through the night!
