This is so incredibly sad. A promising young athlete took her life over the weekend, leaving her friends and family with unanswered questions about what had her so troubled.

A beautiful 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania track star from New Jersey killed herself Friday by jumping to her death from a parking garage in Philadelphia, The Record reported.
Madison Holleran posted a photograph of the sunset over Rittenhouse Square to her Instagram account about an hour before she jumped from a parking garage in Downtown Philadelphia at 7 p.m.
The stunning Holleran competed for the UPenn cross-country and track teams and as an Allendale high schooler she won the 800-meter New Jersey state championship.
The freshman’s friends and fans posted their condolences and grief to the heartbreaking photo she posted before her death.
“Rest in peace Madison, whether you knew it or not you were and are an irreplaceable part of the Highlands family,” wrote Erin Lee.“I keep trying to imagine the pain you must’ve been going through and how lost you must’ve felt. My heart breaks along with the rest of the community after the loss of someone so genuine and kind,” wrote another friend.
Two UPenn events – sorority recruitment and a track and field meet – were both postponed after Holleran’s death, the Daily Pennsylvanian reported.
Very sad, our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.

New Haven police arrested a 23-year-old New Haven man accused of stealing a DVR, cash, frozen chicken, then stabbing a man who confronted him about the thefts, police said.

Police responded to reports of a stabbing at Columbus Avenue and Ella T. Grasso Boulevard at 12:41 p.m. on Saturday and found the victim, Manuel Martinez, 21, shirtless, with an 18-inch long cut from one armpit to the other.
Martinez told police that he and a friend had been at a female friend’s apartment when her ex-boyfriend, Jeremie Jenkins, 23. of Adeline Street in New Haven, showed up.
Jenkins and the woman had broken up a month earlier after a three-day relationship and she told him to leave, but Jenkins got mad and threw a cup and plate outside through the back door, then went through the house, took the DVR, the woman’s wallet, her cash and a bag of frozen chicken, police said.
Martinez and his friend eventually went out looking for Jenkins.
When they confronted him and demanded that he return the stolen items, Jenkins pulled a knife and swung at Martinez, police said.
Police broadcast a description of Jenkins and saw him Jenkins running behind a nearby diner, with blood on him.
Police apprehended Jenkins and handcuffed him.
The wallet, DVR and frozen chicken were recovered from a nearby trash bin, police said.
Jenkins was charged with assault in the first degree, burglary in the first degree and larceny in the sixth degree.
A doctor evaluated Martinez, who is recovering from his wound.

A teacher in Mesa, Arizona is facing a pile of charges after he reportedly forced a six-year-old to remove her shirt as a means of punishment, then made her sit n*ked from the waist up in class.
Police were told the kindergarten teacher “lost his cool” and was shouting in the classroom. The girl was apparently scared and hid her face in the shirt. He told her to take her face out of her shirt, and police say when she refused, he took her shirt off. The girl reportedly cried for more than 10 minutes, sitting shirtless in a packed classroom.
Washburn was arrested, but declined to answer any questions from police.
Washburn now faces 26 counts of indecent exposure (at least one for each child that was in the classroom) and one count of child abuse.
This is just disgusting. He better get the maximum punishment allowed.
Most of these folks have no business telling anybody what they need to do in a relationship.
This is discouraging. A new Harvard study shows there is some discrimination going on in the digital space, specifically on Airbnb, where black hosts have to charge less than non-blacks for comparable rentals.

If you rent a room on Airbnb, odds are you know what your host looks like—their picture is featured front and center. A new report out of Harvard Business School crunched the data, and says this is totally fine, as long as you’re not black.
The study, titled “Digital Discrimination: The Case of Airbnb.com,” puts forth a pretty bleak premise. If you take two rental spaces, of the same general quality and in the same general area, the one owned by a non-black host will cost 12 percent more, on average:
We find that non-black hosts are able to charge approximately 12% more than black hosts, holding location, rental characteristics, and quality constant. Moreover, black hosts receive a larger price penalty for having a poor location score relative to non-black hosts. These differences highlight the risk of discrimination in online marketplaces, suggesting an important unintended consequence of a seemingly-routine mechanism for building trust.
It’s hard to pin down exactly, but the educated presumption is that black Airbnb hosts have to lower their prices in order to compete with non-black Airbnb users, simply because Airbnb users would prefer to not rent from a black host. The study doubts Airbnb is subject to any illegal discrimination liability, because otherwise it wouldn’t show all those black and white faces so prominently.
In a statement to Recode, Airbnb, of course, dismisses the study:
“We are committed to making Airbnb the most open, trusted, diverse, transparent community in the world and our Terms of Service prohibit content that discriminates. The data in this report is nearly two years old and is from only one of the more than 35,000 cities where Airbnb hosts welcome guests into their homes. Additionally, the authors made a number of subjective or inaccurate determinations when compiling their findings.”
Of course, this wouldn’t be a case of Airbnb employing discriminatory policies, or encouraging discrimination—at worst, they’re just facilitating it as a middleman. But it’s a reminder that the “sharing economy” isn’t a fist-bump feel-good utopia, as advertised—we share all our dirty prejudices, too.

19-year-old Chicago rapper Lil Bibby is probably the most buzzed about young rapper in the game right now. Thanks largely to the success of his song “Water” off his ‘Free Crack’ mixtape he’s currently on the receiving end of tons of media attention, something he’s struggling to get used to. BOSSIP caught up with him at his Atlanta mixtape release party at Treesound Studios and he opened up about how his newfound success has changed him and how, like the refrain of his popular song, he’s striving to keep his head above water.
“I’m kind of forced to talk a lot now with the rapper stuff,” Bibby tells BOSSIP at his Atlanta mixtape release party. “So I’m kind of getting out of that.”
As for any pressure he might feel over being dubbed the next to blow, for now he says it’s only made him more focused.
“I can’t put out no more regular records, just playing around,” Bibby admits.”I gotta get in the studio and pick up, since the pressure is there to work on them classic-type records.”
Whether he’s talking or rapping, the accolades over his voice, which has a particularly deep timbre for such a young man, keep pouring in. There’s also been a lot of discussion about what he looks like. When he’s introduced onstage by Treesound owner/manager Groove Chambers, he’s ribbed about his light skin, light eyes and curly hair — a combination that likely has record execs drooling over his potential to sell to girls in much the same way that certain other rappers have before him. Asked about steering clear of the “lightskinned ni**a” stereotypes, Bibby laughs, “What is the stereotype?”
We tell him he’s got the potential to be billed as a sex symbol, that he may be expected to craft music that women will like.
“No, I’ma talk about selling drugs,” Bibby laughs. “That’s what I’ma talk about. The girls – man, they like it. I don’t know if they like the music or me. I don’t know what it is, but they like it.”
He’s in good company too. While he may be steering clear of light skin stereotypes he has already forged a good relationship with Toronto’s very own sex symbol, Drake and speaks of an upcoming collaboration that could be just what he needs.
“Me and Drake may be working in the future,” he confirms. “I talk to him a lot, but you know he be busy. He just got off tour, so hopefully it’ll be soon.”
While Lil Bibby has previously worked with fellow Chi-town rappers Chief Keef and Lil Reese, when we ask him how he’ll avoid running into some of the same legal issues that have plagued some of his counterparts he tells us he doesn’t smoke or drink and quickly dismisses any concerns.
“I don’t move like that anyway. I try to keep everything legal,” Lil Bibby tells BOSSIP. “I try to dodge those problems so you probably won’t see me on the news doing anything.”
At times he seems years older than the baby faced teenager he is, a quality he attributes to his work ethic.
“A lot of people say I’m more mature, but I don’t know. I’m kind of a boring person,” Bibby says. “I don’t like to have fun like that. That’s probably why people call me mature, because I just like to work. I’m just working on a single. That’s what I think I need. I need a big single, a breakout single.”

The Wolf of Wall Street may be all about excess, but the money made by Jonah Hill to play stockbroker Donnie Azoff in the flick is anything but excessive. (Well, at least by Hollywood standards.)
While being interviewed by Howard Stern during his radio show on Tuesday, Jan. 21, the 30-year-old actor admitted he was willing to work for the SAG minimum in order to collaborate with director Martin Scorsese.
What’s more, Hill told Stern he couldn’t sign his contract fast enough because he was so afraid they would change their minds and hire someone else.
But of course, that didn’t happen. And now, Hill finds himself nominated for an Academy Award for his performance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
And you can’t put a price tag on that.
“I am in complete and total shock,” Hill said in a statement after receiving the nod in the Best Supporting Actor category last week. “I honestly was not expecting this, on a level you can’t even imagine. Again, I’m clearly in shock. I didn’t have a plan for celebrating today because I truly did not expect any of this…Truly, this is shocking.”

Maybe DJ Quik had it right in 1995 when he rapped: “If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense.” That could explain Twitter’s reluctance to acknowledge its most popular community, Black Twitter, until now.
Yesterday it was announced that Twitter plans to capitalize on its racially diverse user base. According to a recent report by the Pew Research Center, black, Hispanic, and Asian-American users account for 41 percent of Twitter’s 54 million users.
For some, this might seem like a revelation. For others, this is old news. Over the last seven years, as Twitter has become deeply embedded into our daily lives, Black Twitter, too, has grown into a cultural phenomenon of sorts. We first wrote about the social network’s subgroup in 2012, and have since covered the community time and again. From #PaulasBestDishes to #BlackBuzzFeed, Black Twitter has consistently provided an outlet to air grievances (the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman trial), analyze new shows (Scandal, Drake on SNL), and shoot the shit with friends.
“Perhaps the most significant contribution of Black Twitter is that it increases visibility of black people online, and in doing so, dismantles the idea that white is standard and everything else is ‘other,’” wrote Soraya Nadia McDonald for the Washington Post. “It’s a radical demand for acceptance by simply existing—or sometimes dominating—in a space and being yourself, without apology or explanation.”
That Twitter decided to hire marketing veteran Nuria Santamaria as its multicultural strategist to help better target black, Hispanic and Asian-American users may or may not be the solution to increasing engagement among non-white users. “Maybe Twitter doesn’t know how to talk about Black Twitter,” wondered Nitasha Tiku.

Regardless, Santamaria plans to target Twitter’s Hispanic population first. The Wall Street Journal reports: “Advertisers want to know more about racial and ethnic minorities on Twitter, from basic numbers to the languages in which they tweet … Twitter’s share of Hispanic users roughly parallels the U.S. online population, but it is a fast-growing, increasingly affluent ethnic group. Hispanics are also more easily identified because of their language. Twitter doesn’t ask users about race or ethnicity but categorizes them into ‘interests’ based on their tweets and whom they follow.”

A Chinese man who was found guilty of raping 6 women and having two of them killed while keeping them as sex slaves for up to nearly 2 years.

China executed a man on Tuesday who kept six women in a dungeon as sex slaves for periods of up to 21 months, during which he coerced three of them to kill two of their fellow captives, a court official said.
One of the three was later sentenced to three years in prison for her part in the deaths.
Executed Li Hao, 36, had dug a dungeon underneath a basement he bought in August 2009 and tricked women who worked at hair salons, karaoke bars and a massage parlor into going there with him, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Li repeatedly raped the women, who were held there between two and 21 months, it said. Police said he wanted to make money by forcing the women into prostitution and appear in obscene webcasts.
His dungeon in Luoyang city in central Henan province was finally discovered after one of the women escaped and went to police.
