Black On The 4th Of July: Blogger Shares Unpleasant Plane Experience After Spotting Seatmate Text “Sitting Thigh To Thigh With A Big Fat N-Word”
If you’re anything like us, the 4th of July holiday was met with mixed emotions. But things were particularly tough for a black professor and blogger who experienced racism firsthand on the plane ride home to Louisiana for the holiday weekend.
Brittney Cooper shared her story via Salon.com, which we’ve excerpted below:
As we boarded, I noticed that this mom and I would be sitting in the same row, I in the window seat, she in the center. As we sat awaiting takeoff, I finished a text conversation and signaled to the flight attendant for a seat-belt extender, a fat passenger’s best friend. Then just as the call came to shut our phones off, I glanced over at her, and she was still texting, rapidly. I caught a few words of the end of her text that made me look more intently: “on the plane, sitting thigh to thigh with a big fat n***er. Lucky me.”
Immediately I was hyper-aware – looking around, feeling marked, wondering if others find my large, dark-skinned body as distasteful as my seatmate did.
Even so, I was acutely aware, at least intellectually, that the problem lay with her and not me. But what would my recourse be. Though she was no toothpick herself, she is a white lady, a mom, with children and a husband – all the trappings of American middle-class respectability. Moreover, she sent those words in a private text communication. I am a fat, dark-skinned black woman. Had I gone off and set it off as she deserved, in all probability I would have been seen as the terrorist threat. Especially on the eve of the Fourth of July.
I started by sharing her words in a status update on Facebook — in part because in recent days, I have seen one too many friends, both black and white, readily defending Paula Deen, and arguing that her use of the N-word was an understandable byproduct of her Southern roots and most assuredly a relic of a bygone era.
However, as far as I could tell, this young family, in which the parents looked to be mid- to late 30s, were Northerners. So after waiting awhile and getting a handle on the tears that started coming steadily after I saw her words, I simply got her attention and asked her to read the Facebook status from my smartphone.
She saw it, kind of grunted her assent, and then said nothing. So I pressed forward, in a low voice: “I just want to let you know that your words were hurtful. And I hope you don’t pass that kind of ignorance down to your beautiful boys.” She replied curtly, “I don’t.”

A soccer referee in Brazil was gruesomely quartered and beheaded after he fatally stabbed a player on the field during a match.
The match took place June 30 at Pius XII stadium in Maranhao, northeastern Brazil.
According to Correio24horas, 30-year-old player Josenir dos Santos Abreu approached the 20-year-old referee, Octavio da Silva Catanhede Jordan, to argue a call.The two couldn’t come to terms so Catanhede Jordan told the player to leave the field.
Santos Abreu refused and the argument turned heated when the referee allegedly pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed Santos Abreu multiple times.
The player died en route to the hospital. Fans outraged by the stabbing – believed to be the player’s friends and family – stormed the pitch and cornered Catanhede Jordan.
The mob showed no mercy as they quartered and decapitated the referee and then placed his head on a stake.
So far police in Santa Ines, Maranhao have arrested one man, 27-year-old Luis Moraes Souza, in relation to the gruesome crime – but may be looking for two other men named ‘Chiquinho’ and ‘Pirolo’ according to a few other Brazilian blogs.
Valter Costa, police chief of Santa Ines, released a statement about the investigation.
‘Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact,’ he said. ‘We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law.’

They smelled a rat.
A Long Island flight attendant was accused of hiding pet rats in her pantyhose and panties in order to sneak them onto planes, according to a lawsuit.
But veteran American Airlines stewardess Louann Giambattista, 55, says allegations made by three colleagues were “absurd” and “patently false” — and they have turned her life upside-down.
The purported “Willard” witnesses included a pilot who helped her out of a van at the airport during a layover on Feb. 26, 2012. The aviator claimed “he saw a bulge in [her] pocket” and saw “what he thought was a live pet,” according to papers filed in Brooklyn federal court.
Later, during the flight from St. Martin to Miami, a fellow flight attendant “believed [Giambattista] fed her pet rats,” court papers said.
Giambattista, an admitted animal lover, said the co-worker assumed she was feeding her furry friends because she saw her “eating a dinner roll out of a cup.” But Giambattista claims the roll was for her — and that she hid it in a cup to avoid looking unprofessional in front of passengers.
When the co-workers ratted on Giambattista upon landing in Florida, a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent questioned her and searched her belongings for an hour, she alleges.
A lawyer for the Long Beach woman called the claims of flying rodents preposterous.
“Everybody has pets — she has her pets at home, not at work,” attorney Stephen Morelli said. “She’s not a nut. They’re making her out to be a nut.”
In response to the reported rats on a plane, the airline put a flag on her passport, according to the lawsuit Giambattista filed last week.
Though no critters were ever found, Giambattista said she remained blacklisted for more than a year, with federal agents subjecting her to stops and searches every time she passed through customs, “making it nearly impossible for [her] to report to work.” ICE agents bullied her and threatened her with a strip search, she charges in court papers.
She claims she was put “on display” during one interrogation in an employee break room, as other airline employees filtered in and out “purely to observe.”
The situation left her with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, including “debilitating anxiety,” Giambattista claims.
But American Airlines refused to transfer her to domestic flights so she could avoid customs, the 33-year industry veteran maintains.
“There was no reason for it,” Giambattista said of why she was targeted. “People say, ‘There must have been a reason,’ but there is none.”
Giambattista is seeking unspecified damages. American Airlines said it would respond to the claims in court.
A dog owner, Giambattista also has gerbils and hamsters.
“She’s got a lot of different pets,” lawyer Morelli said. “She had the rat — it died.”
Post-traumatic stress…really? That’s almost as crazy as carrying a rat in your underwear.
