Legislation Attacks Abortion

According to Raw Story

Legislation to ban Islamic law in North Carolina now also contains a number of anti-abortion measures, potentially closing all but one abortion clinic in the state.

“This attempted sneak attack on women’s reproductive rights is absolutely shameful,” Sarah Preston of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina said Tuesday. “Issues as vital and personal as access to comprehensive health care and doctor-patient relationships deserve to be debated in an open, public process – not hastily pushed through without notice and under the cover of night during a holiday week.”

House Bill 695 originally sought to prohibit courts from using Sharia and other foreign laws in family law proceedings. The North Carolina Senate Judiciary committee on Tuesday unexpectedly tacked on six anti-abortion measures late in the afternoon and sent the bill to the Senate floor for a vote.

U.S. Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) said she was “appalled” by Republicans’ attempt to use “procedural tricks” to ram the anti-abortion measures through the state Senate.

The legislation would now allow any health care provider to opt out of providing abortion-related services, prohibit health plans offered through federal health care exchanges from offering abortion coverage, outlaw sex-selection abortions, require doctors to stay in the room during the entire abortion procedure, force abortion clinics to obtain patient-transfer agreements with local hospitals, and mandate that abortion clinics meet the same stringent standards as outpatient surgical centers.

“These loathsome restrictions and the deceitful method through which the Senate tried to pass them are an obvious effort to not simply prevent women in North Carolina from having comprehensive access to much-needed health care, but to not even give them an opportunity to weigh in on legislation that will have wide-ranging impacts on women and doctors all across our state,” Preston added.

Sen. Warren Daniel (R-Morganton) told the News & Observer that abortion clinics should be regulated the same way as surgical centers. Just one clinic in the state currently meets that standard, which includes regulations on corridor widths and room sizes, among many others.

“The politicians who responsible for this backdoor maneuvering have taken seriously the rising tide of activists gathering weekly outside the General Assembly to oppose anti-choice legislation. Unfortunately, the lesson they’ve taken is that the best way to accomplish their goals is to hide their maneuvers from the public,” said Suzanne Buckley of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina.

Shakira has filed a declaration in her legal war with Antonio De La Rua — who she dated from 2000 to 2010 — in which she adamantly denies A.D.L.R. has any right to her fortune, despite his claim that he’s entitled to a cut of her businesses.

FYI — A.D.L.R. claims he wasn’t just Shak’s lover, he was also her business adviser and says she owes him a quarter of a BILLION dollars … based on an oral agreement the two struck back in 2004.

But Shakira is calling B.S. on Antonio … claiming in 2011, he sent her an email in which he couldn’t have made it any clearer — “I am not a partner in any of your companies. You are the sole owner of all of them.”

Shakira says he sent a similar email to her mother.

In the legal docs, filed in L.A. County Superior Court, Shakira also says she had hammered out a relationship contract back in 2006 — the equivalent of a prenup — that spelled out their financial obligations to one another in case they broke up.

According to Shakira, both parties agreed back in ’06 to create a joint account worth $10k … which they would split if they broke up. Shakira says they also agreed to “renounce” any rights to future earnings.

Shakira explains the point of the contract was to prevent a stupid lawsuit … like the one Antonio has filed.

The case is due back in court later this month.

Officials say sixteen people have been killed in clashes between supporters and opponents of Egypt’s president as the country faces the prospect of civil war. Unofficial sources claim the figure could be as many as 23.

The death toll comes after a night of violence outside Cairo University, which also left as many as 200 injured.

President Mohammed Morsi, who yesterday rebuffed an army ultimatum to force a resolution to Egypt’s political crisis, has made an emotional speech which was aired live to the nation.

The confrontation has pushed the most populous Arab nation closer to the abyss amid a deepening economic crisis two years after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, raising concern in Washington, Europe and neighbouring Israel.

But as anti-Morsi protests entered the third day, Egyptian shares jumped to a three-week high this morning.

The bourse’s benchmark index jumped 4.9 per cent in early trade to its highest point since June 9 after a bank holiday on Monday to mark the start of a new fiscal year.

Share prices fell 12 per cent in June amid fears that a mass protest called for June 30 might deteriorate into violence, further aggravating a deteriorating economy.

Hopefully this senseless violence will stop.

Woman Killed Newborn Twins

If she didn’t want her babies, there were plenty of couples who would love those healthy babies. This was an unnecessary tragedy.

A woman has been arrested in Virginia for the murder of her newborn twins who were found dead in a pile of trash 15 years ago.

Darnesha Paulita Berry, 34, was held after a cold case unit reexamined the shocking deaths of the boy and girl at a Virginia college.

DNA also linked Berry, who is now married with a young child, to the bodies of the twins who died from head injuries before being tossed away.

Their bodies were found in a trash room at the Holt Hall dorm at St Paul’s College in February 1998.

Berry was a student at the college but was not considered a suspect at the time.

Investigators believe the babies were born in a bathroom, killed and then tossed down a trash chute from a hallway inside the dorm building.

The state medical examiner’s office concluded that the cause of death for both babies was blunt-force trauma to the head.

The double murder remained unsolved until a local TV station ran a story on the murders that was under review by a cold case team.

A number of tip-offs and DNA evidence led them to Berry.

She was held at her part time job in a bank in Henrico and is being held without bond at the Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta.

Assistant Chief B.N. Newcomb of the Lawrenceville Police Department said Berry was not considered a suspect then the bodies of the twins were found.

‘It’s a good thing to finally make an arrest and bring some closure to it,’ Newcomb said. ‘It’s something that we’ve been working on for a long time and haven’t forgotten.’

During a TV interview talking about the cold case Newcomb had said the deaths of the newborns was one of the cases that had troubled him during his career.

‘I just couldn’t believe that someone had thrown these two children away,’ he said.

‘It’s one of those cases that a police officer has in his career that haunts him.’

Berry does not have a criminal record and lives in Richmond area.

The woman accusing 50 Cent of domestic violence is NOT Shaniqua Tompkins — the mother of the rapper’s 16-year-old son — it’s ANOTHER baby mama, TMZ has learned.

The L.A. City Attorney tells TMZ … 50 is accused of causing $7,100 in damage during the June 23 incident, which took place inside the victim’s condo in Toluca Lake, Ca.

According to officials, LAPD officers were called to the scene … and the woman told cops she had gotten into an altercation with 50 and locked herself in the bedroom.

50 — real name Curtis Jackson — allegedly got so mad, he kicked down the door and kicked her, resulting in an injury.

Officials say the 37-year-old rapper is also accused of breaking chandeliers, furniture, a TV and a lamp — and allegedly ransacked the bedroom closet — during his rampage.

Officials say 50 left the scene before cops arrived.

50 has been hit with 5 charges in total — including 1 count misdemeanor domestic violence and 4 counts of misdemeanor vandalism.

If convicted on all counts, 50 could face up to five years in jail and $46,000 in fines.

50 is due in court to be arraigned on July 22.

Girl Found Naked In Neighborhood

Theses are the first heartbreaking photos to emerge of Alanna Gallagher, the little six-year-old girl found horrifically stripped, bound and and murdered in a quiet suburban Fort Worth neighborhood.

The photos reveal an adorable child with no shortage of smiles for the camera. Neighbors said she was an inquisitive ‘spitfire’ who always seemed to have questions that betrayed an intellect beyond her young age.

Alanna’s body was found wrapped in a tarp a mile and a half from her home in Saginaw, Texas, on Monday night. She her hands and feet were bound, she had a plastic bag over her head and she was naked except for a pair of purple underwear.

Police on Wednesday announced that the FBI has offered a $10,000 reward for anyone who helps them find the monster who abducted Alanna from her parents’ house.

At a news conference, police spokesman Damon Ing said investigators are tracking down several leads and have already received numerous tips about the disappearance of little Alanna – but they need to public’s help to find her killer.

Alanna’s parents have been ruled out as suspects in the case, Ing said. Her mother and father have been meeting with police chaplains and grief counselors since their daughter disappeared Monday night.

Investigators say they are trying to figure out exactly when Alanna was taken from her home. Her body was found about 7.30pm about a mile and a half from her parents’ house.

Alanna’s two other siblings are staying with family friends while their parents are being questioned by police.

Neighbors say they noticed a red pickup truck with a green splotch on the rear passenger-side panel in the neighborhood shortly before the body was found.

Investigators believe the driver may have something to do with the body and have asked anyone with information about the truck to come forward.

Lil’ Wayne Associate Arrested For Murder</h2

According to The Nola Defender

New Orleans rapper Widner DeGruy, 21, who performs as Flow and was signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment label in 2012, has been booked with attempted first-degree murder in Chalmette and two counts of armed robbery, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann said Tuesday evening. DeGruy, also known by the nickname Esho Hero, was arrested in the Oakland, Calif., area recently by a U.S. Marshal’s task force and was returned to Chalmette on Thursday for prosecution after waiving extradition, Pohlmann said.

DeGruy had fled to California after arrest warrants alleged that he had shot at, and narrowly missed, an eastern St. Bernard man he knew on April 29. He allegedly had beaten and robbed that man and another eastern St. Bernard man of cash and their cellphones, Pohlmann said.

Detectives have not released information about a possible motive in the shooting and robberies, and the Sheriff’s Office did not immediately release the name of the alleged victims, stating fears about possible retaliation.

DeGruy, whose last known address was in the 7900 block of Bass Street in eastern New Orleans, allegedly had two people with him during the attacks and an investigation is continuing, Pohlmann said. DeGruy was being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison on Tuesday evening in lieu of a $350,000 bond.
