Chicago Mother And 1-Year-Old Son Shot While Sitting In Van At The Park

A mother and her 1-year-old son who were shot while sitting inside of their van at the park are said to be in stable condition and resting at the local hospital.

A mother and her 1-year-old son were wounded as they sat in a van packed with women and children near a South Side park, according to police and family.

Leslie Freeman was in the front passenger seat with Demonte Freeman on her lap, enjoying the cool summer evening near Murray Park in West Englewood, when the side door of a red van slid open and two men fired nearly a dozen shots around 6 p.m Sunday, according to relatives.

The bullets missed a 7-year-old child who was outside the van and four younger children who were inside. But they hit Leslie Freeman in the wrist and the boy in the leg.

“She panicked,” said the woman’s uncle, John Edwards. “She just knew that Demonte was shot worse than she was.”

Demonte and a 1-year-old cousin were both stained with blood and relatives believed both had been shot, relatives said. But then they realized that the blood came from Demonte, who had fallen onto his cousin after being shot.

“He didn’t even actually cry when he was shot,” said the boy’s grandmother, Sabrina Freeman, 46. “I don’t know if he was in shock or whatever.”

A family friend drove Demonte and his mother to Holy Cross Hospital, where they were later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital and reported as stable.

Freeman said her grandson “is doing all right. They decided to leave the bullet in because they don’t want to remove the bullet right now.”

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the call,” Sabrina Freeman said. “Who would do something like this?”

She said her daughter “didn’t understand why this happened to her. She’s not this type of person, she’s not in the streets or anything like that. She’s worried about her son, her baby.

The summer streak of violence doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down in Chi-town….

Teenager Shoots Brother In The Head

A teenager shot his high school basketball star brother in the head while playing with his father’s gun, a court has heard.

Michael Whitney then attempted to cover his tracks by shooting out a window and moving his brother’s body to another room on Friday, prosecutors have said.

The 19-year-old had taken the semi-automatic handgun which belonged to his security guard father from a drawer before teasing his 16-year-old brother Malcolm.

Malcolm was a standout basketball player at Hyde Park Academy.

At first police thought Malcolm, who was found face down on a sofa, died of an accidental self-inflicted gun-shot.

But his older brother Michael was charged on Saturday with manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

According to prosecutors, Michael approached his brother who was in the bathroom and pointed the gun at him.

When Malcolm reached for the gun, it fired hitting him in the head.

Despite trying to lie about the sequence of events, Michael eventually admitted he was responsible.

Michael Whitney has four prior felony burglary convictions and is a freshman at Illinois State University.

He appeared in Cook County criminal court today where his bail was set at $1million.

Before setting the bail amount, Circuit Court Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. said, ‘The problem is, this tragedy would not have occurred if a convicted felon had not touched a firearm, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Whitney broke down in tears in the courtroom while members of his family consoled each other.

If he would have just said, “I’m sorry I accidentally shot my brother” then he would have been fine. He messed up when he tried to cover his tracks. So sad.

A 15-year-old singer has had it with Young Money and Lil Wayne and wants to jump ship … and he’s asking a court for help.

Torion Sellers claims in new legal docs — obtained by TMZ — he auditioned for Lil Wayne when he was only 13 and Wayne immediately saw what he called Torion’s “amazing voice” and “God-given gift and talent.”

According to the docs, Wayne signed Torion to Young Money and promised to record and release an album by Spring, 2012. But tick tock, tick tock … still no album more than a year later.

Torion claims Wayne and company have abandoned him, and he wants out of the contract. He claims Young Money screwed up by forgetting to get court approval of the contract it signed with the kid, and on that basis Torion wants to 86 the deal.

Torion believes he will be snatched up by another record label, but no one will touch him until a judge rules the Young Money deal is invalid.

Sorority Girl Wrongly Locked Up

A college student who was buying sparkling water, ice cream and cookie dough for a sorority fundraiser spent a night in jail after authorities mistook the bottles for a 12-pack of beer.

Elizabeth Daly, a 20-year-old University of Virginia student, said she was ‘terrified’ when a group of plainclothes state Alcoholic Beverage Control agents approached her car in the dark.

Having just attended an evening vigil on campus where women shared stories of their experiences with sexual assault, Miss Daly, who was with her college roommate, said she ‘panicked’ when she saw the men and drove off, before being arrested and charged with three felonies.

‘They were showing unidentifiable badges after they approached us, but we became frightened, as they were not in anything close to a uniform,’ Miss Daly, 20 recalled last week in a written account of the April 11 incident.

‘I couldn’t put my windows down unless I started my car, and when I started my car, they began yelling to not move the car, not to start the car.

They began trying to break the windows. My roommates and I were … terrified,’ she explained.

Police say one of the agents, who had mistaken Miss Daly’s purchase of LaCroix sparkling water from the Harris Teeter in the Barracks Road Shopping Center, for a pack of beer, jumped on the hood of her car. Miss Daly claims that one drew a gun.

After fleeing the parking lot in the SUV and ‘grazing’ two of the plainclothes officers, Miss Daly said she called 911 to report the attack, and also confirm the identities of the officers.

Another Alcoholic Beverage Control agent in a police vehicle pulled over the car, where Miss Daly was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer.

Charges have since been dropped against the student, with Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney Dave Chapman telling The Daily Progess that ‘it wouldn’t be right’ to prosecute the case.

The case is currently under review by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Bureau of Law Enforcement,
a state-run agency whose mission is to safely and responsibly administer the sale and consumption of alcohol.

‘This has been an extremely trying experience,’ said Miss Daly. ‘It is something to this day I cannot understand or believe has come to this point.’

Boyfriend Kills Toddler

A three-year-old girl died after suffering ‘indescribable atrocities’ allegedly at the hands of her mother’s boyfriend which included a skull fracture, bite marks, burns, trauma to her genitals and swollen eyes.

Carroll Bumgarner-Ramos, 29, from Willimantic, Connecticut, has been charged with first-degree assault and risk of injury. More serious charges are expected to be filed pending autopsy results.

The paramedic who treated the toddler at the scene said her injuries were the worst he’d seen on a child in his 21-year career.

The girl was in cardiac arrest and didn’t breathe during the ambulance ride to Windham Hospital, the paramedic told police.

Bumgarner-Ramos was arraigned on Monday in Danielson Superior Court where his bail was set at $1million.

Prosecutor Patricia M. Froehlich said: ‘Those photos demonstrate indescribable atrocities to that child. The words in the affidavit couldn’t even describe.

Froehlich said her office will also be seeking warrants for the arrest of ‘an additional person or persons’ in the victim’s death.

According to court records, it was the second time the 29-year-old babysat the girl while her mother Kim Lam was at work. She told police there were no injuries on her child before she left for work.

A neighbor performed CPR until an ambulance arrived, according to The Hartford Courant.

Lam told police she returned home after 9pm and noticed the baby lying in bed with vomit all around her.

She was babbling, her face was swollen and her body was bruised.

The toddler was pronounced dead at the hospital and had a swollen head, burn marks on her feet, bite marks all over her body, bowel hemorrhaging and abrasions to her pelvic area. There was also evidence of sexual assault.

Neighbor Robert Trevorrow told WFSB: ‘I heard one of my roommates yelling, “Help me! Nevie’s not breathing. She’s not breathing. Come downstairs”.

‘So I flew downstairs and started CPR until the ambulance showed up.’

Lam and her daughter had been living in the Potter Street apartment with Bumgarner-Ramos for about a month.

He denies hurting the child and has been committed at Windham Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after threatening to kill himself.

He has three cases pending in Superior Court in Danielson. In one case, he is accused of punching and choking a pregnant woman he was dating in April. He is also charged in a drug case and with violating probation.

We’re told when Hernandez and Shayanna Jenkins began arguing — because she wanted to pull the plug on the party — Hernandez put his fist through a window.

His hand was cut badly enough that there “was blood everywhere.”

We’re told Jenkins called police in a last ditch effort to break up the party.

Law enforcement sources tell us cops have been to the house multiple times — and that Hernandez “had no regard” for anyone who complained about his all-night parties.

The word neighbors keep using to describe him is … “nightmare.”
