Black Spanish Teacher Fired For Use Of The “N-Word”

A Bronx teacher says her language lesson was lost in translation when she was fired for calling a student “Negro” — though she claims she was simply using the Spanish word for the color “black” at the time, according to a new lawsuit. The non-tenured junior high instructor, Petrona Smith, 65, was booted from the bilingual PS 211 in March 2012 after a seventh-grader reported the alleged insult.
Smith, who is black and a native of the West Indies, has been unemployed since her ouster. “They haven’t even accounted for how absurd it is for someone who’s black to be using a racial slur to a student,” said Shaun Reid, Smith’s attorney. “Talk about context! There’s a lot of things wrong here.”
She denied calling the student a “Negro,” and explained to investigators that she was teaching a lesson about how to say different colors in Spanish and said the word “negro,” which is Spanish for the color black. She told her students that it was not a derogatory term and that the Spanish word for a black person was “moreno.” She added that she’d been verbally abused by her charges, including being called a “f—ing monkey,” a “cockroach” and a “n—r,” but had never stooped to their level.
A 2011 investigation substantiated the student’s undated claims based on accounts from four seventh-grade witnesses, even though the student’s own parents said he’d lied about the event.

Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry has surprised middle school students in Ohio by showing up at a musical concert and donating $100,000 to help student athletes in the city’s South-Western schools.
The Columbus Dispatch ( ) reports that Perry was drawn to Finland Middle School on Friday after seeing a TV report about teacher Mary Mulvany starting a foundation to raise scholarship money to cover fees.
South-Western schools earned national attention when athletics and extra-curricular activities were eliminated after a failed levy in 2009. The ballot request was later approved by voters, and sports, clubs and other activities were resurrected for a fee.
Perry says he wants to sponsor as many children as possible and wants part of the money to go toward Finland and some to the foundation.
Tyler Perry is a brave, generous, caring man. While do-nothings knock him, he continues to share his fortune with other people. He has not forgotten where he comes from. This donation to the Finland School is only the latest on a long list of good deeds Mr. Perry has done. Thank you again, Mr. Perry.

Robbie Rogers Becomes First Openly Gay American Athlete To Play In A Pro Game

Robbie Rogers has become the first openly gay male athlete to play in a U.S. professional league. Rogers made his Los Angeles debut Sunday night, entering as a substitute in the 77th minute with the Galaxy leading the Seattle Sounders 4-0.
Rogers received loud cheers from the crowd as he ran onto the pitch. Fans chanted his last name.
Before the game, Rogers was the focus of six photographers after he and the other subs sat on the bench.
Marc Burch, a Sounders substitute, slapped hands with Rogers as he headed toward the visiting bench.
Seattle coach Sigi Schmid, who once coached the Galaxy, sought out Rogers for a supportive pre-game hug. Rogers signed with the team Saturday after being acquired from the Chicago Fire. The Galaxy traded Mike Magee to his hometown Fire in exchange for the rights to Rogers, who signed a multiyear deal.

17 People Shot Over Holiday Weekend In Chicago

With Memorial Day weekend underway, Chicago’s violence has spiked as six people were killed and at least 11 others were injured in shootings across the city. The most recent fatal shooting occurred Sunday when a 42-year-old man was shot in the head and a 44-year-old female was shot in the back on Goose Island on the Near North Side. The pair was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where the man, identified as Charles Jones by the Cook County Medical Examiner, was pronounced dead, according to Chicago Police news affairs Officer John Mirabelli. Jones was the manager of the Factory Chicago, a gentlemen’s club on the Far South Side. A tweet from the Factory Chicago read: “God called his soldier home, R.I.P. Charles Jones.” A cousin of the female victim, Andrew Holmes, said the pair was sideswiped while driving in Jones’ 2007 Maserati and was shot while approaching the driver of the other vehicle.
- At 2:10 a.m., a 27-year-old man was shot in the armpit in the 12100 block of South Indiana Avenue. He was later pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center, police said.
- Earlier in the evening, an 18-year-old man was shot to death in an alley. The shooting occurred at 9:20 p.m. Saturday in an alley between Dorchester and Dante Avenues near 74th Street. A light-colored sedan reportedly drove passed the alley where the boy and several others were standing and began shooting. The man was struck in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the man is believed to have gang ties.
- Two other shootings occurred Saturday night including one that hospitalized a 17-year-old man with multiple wounds in both of his legs after he was shot in the 6000 block of North Kenmore Avenue.
- Another teen was shot in the 700 block of West 50th Place in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The 19-year-old man was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in stable condition, authorities said.
- Early Saturday, a man was shot and killed in the Hyde Park community, blocks from President Barack Obama’s Kenwood home.
- Around 11:45 p.m. Friday a 22-year-old man was found fatally shot outside his home in the 1100 block of North Lawndale Avenue. The man was discovered on the sidewalk outside his home with a gunshot wound in the back of his head and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
- The weekend’s first fatality involved a 17-year-old man who was shot in the head two times around 11 p.m. Friday in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The man was found in 400 block of North Central Avenue where he was pronounced dead.
- An 18-year-old man was also found wounded in the same shooting and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said.
At least seven others were reported injured in shootings throughout the weekend.

“Christian” radio host Linda Harvey is yet again making waves with her controversial point of view regarding gay people.

Do gay employees deserve to be fired for lowering the “moral standards” of employers?
That’s the suggestion made by conservative Christian radio host Linda Harvey, who told listeners of her “Mission: America” radio program on Monday that employers should have the right to keep “open homosexuals or cross-dressers” from “modeling that lifestyle to kids.”
Harvey, who for years has warned Americans about the dangers of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender “lifestyle,” said she believes being gay is a choice, reports Right Wing Watch.
“The fact is that no one needs to be involved in homosexuality,” Harvey said on her radio show. “And all of the good qualities a person may have that might make that person otherwise an excellent employee don’t require a homosexual lifestyle.”
In an email to The Huffington Post, Harvey wrote that since “no one needs to be homosexual, those who choose to be very open and proud about their same-sex desires, which they could overcome if they decided to, may present problems in the workplace for an employer.”

Wade Robson Threatens To Sue Joe Jackson Over Claim That He Was Paid To Lie About MJ Sex Abuse
According to TMZ reports:
Wade Robson is going after another Jackson family member — this time threatening legal action against Joe Jackson if he continues to spread vicious lies … this according to legal docs.
Wade’s lawyers fired off a cease and desist letter to Papa Jackson on May 25, accusing him of slander and warning JJ to stop dragging Wade’s name through the mud.
The letter cites a video TMZ posted … in which Joe tells our photog Wade is being PAID to lie about the whole “Michael Jackson molested me” thing … as part of some giant conspiracy.
Wade’s lawyers unload on Joe for the accusation, writing, “Your statement is particularly reprehensible in light of the fact that [Wade] has only recently been able to come forward which is so typically characteristic and tragic for so many survivors of sexual abuse.”
It continues, “Any trier of fact would conclude your statement was malicious, intended to further injure our client.”
Then come the threats … Wade’s lawyers say they will not hesitate to “take any and all appropriate legal measures to vehemently protect the truth and commence legal action.”
Even if Wade IS telling the truth, Michael Jackson is dead with no way to defend himself. We can’t figure out how he plans on actually proving that he was molested, but one thing is for sure, Wade wants someone to make it rain on him…pause.
