This New Bill Probably Won’t Pass, But It Really Really Should
A new bill introduced in the House of Representatives would require Trump to undergo a physical and mental health exam in order to determine if he is stable enough to stay in office. Rep. Zoe Lofgren introduced the bill on Friday. If the bill were to pass and the results of the said exam turn out unfavorable, the bill calls for Vice President Mike Pence and members of the Cabinet to remove Trump from office.
The move call into play the 25th Amendment, which is a rarely-used constitutional provision that allows the vice president and a majority of Cabinet members to jointly remove the president from office and replace him with the vice president.
Lofgren represents California’s 19th district and is not a professional psychiatrist or psychologist. She doesn’t expect the bill to actually pass, but she told Mercury New that, “it will stimulate conversation,” also saying that Trump would get the evaluation if “he cares about the country.” (Plot twist, he doesn’t.)
Many articles have been published since his election suggesting the enactment of the 25th Amendment, and this summer, the hashtag #25thAmendment began trending. Lofgren is calling for Mike Pence and other Cabinet members to “quickly secure … medical and psychiatric professionals” to evaluate Trump’s mental health and any possible impairments.
