AirBNB will be helping evacuees from Florida and South Carolina find shelter as category five Hurricane Matthew ushers through both states. According to their website, the company has launched their Disaster Response Tool that will help people find a place to stay when there are mandatory evacuations. To find shelter, evacuees reach out to hosts who are willing to open their homes to them, free of charge. Hosts must live outside the parameters of Hurricane Matthew’s path and allow people to stay for several days. According to AirBNB’s website: Airbnb hosts can respond to crises in their community by offering housing to displaced neighbors and relief workers deployed to help. During an emergency, Airbnb may email local hosts with information about how to help and how to offer their extra space to affected community members. These hosts are still covered by the Host Guarantee, and Airbnb’s fees are waived…

Jay Z Is Producing The Richard Pryor Biopic, Too

…The announcement was made alongside the news that Jay Z would also be producing a docu-series on Kalief Browder. The two projects come from a partnership that Jay has formed with television heavyweights The Weinstein Company. The film itself, Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said, has beens stuck in production purgatory for more than a decade. Originally, the film was to be handled by Chris Rock and Adam Sandler with Marlon Wayans portraying Pryor. Then the project fell into the hands of director Lee Daniels with Mike Epps slated to play the iconic comedian while Eddie Murphy played his father and Oprah Winfrey appearing as his grandmother. But then Daniels abandoned the project before production began. He has now reportedly returned to create the film with the same cast still intact…

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Resented People Expecting Her To Be Grateful To Beyoncé

Several years have passed since Beyoncé released the self-titled album which exposed millions of fans to her newfound feminine side, a side best reflected in the song “Flawless” which included excerpts from accomplished author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk “We Should All Be Feminists.” After years of declining to speak on her inclusion, Ngozi Adichie recently revealed her feelings about her work being included on the Beyoncé album.

In an interview with Volkskrant at the Brainwash Festival in Amsterdam Ngozi Adichie confirms that she was onboard — at least at first:

‘In the first place: of course Beyoncé asked permission to use my texts, and I did give her permission. I think she’s lovely and I am convinced that she has nothing but the best intentions. In addition, Beyoncé is a celebrity of the first order and with this song she has reached many people who would otherwise probably never have heard the word feminism, let alone gone out and buy my essay.’

‘But I was shocked about how many requests for an interview I received when that song was released. Literally every major newspaper in the world wanted to speak with me about Beyoncé. I felt such a resentment (laughs loudly). I thought: are books really that unimportant to you? Another thing I hated was that I read everywhere: now people finally know her, thanks to Beyoncé, or: she must be very grateful. I found that disappointing. I thought: I am a writer and I have been for some time and I refuse to perform in this charade that is now apparently expected of me: “Thanks to Beyoncé, my life will never be the same again.” That’s why it didn’t speak about it much.’

Zaaaayuuuuuum girl. But that has to be annoying to work your butt off so hard and then have Beyoncé get all the credit like she discovered you. Still it does seem like Bey did kinda sorta change her life — nah?

Ngozi Adichie takes her comments a step further to differentiate how her brand of feminism is MUCH different than Beyoncé’s:

‘Her style is not my style, but I do find it interesting that she takes a stand in political and social issues, since a few years. She portrays a woman who is in charge of her own destiny, who does her own thing, and she has girl power. I am very taken with that.’

‘Still, her type of feminism is not mine, as it is the kind that, at the same time, gives quite a lot of space to the necessity of men. I think men are lovely, but I don’t think that women should relate everything they do to men: did he hurt me, do I forgive him, did he put a ring on my finger? We women are so conditioned to relate everything to men. Put a group of women together and the conversation will eventually be about men. Put a group of men together and they will not talk about women at all, they will just talk about their own stuff. We women should spend about 20 per cent of our time on men, because it’s fun, but otherwise we should also be talking about our own stuff.’

Ngozi Adichie actually seems to have a lot of nice things to say about Beyoncé we just wonder how the Beehive will receive some of the less positive things.

President Obama And Macklemore Discuss Opioid Addiction In America

CNN is reporting that MTV is set to air a documentary starring President Obama and Macklemore about America’s drug problem, specifically, opioid addiction.

“The good news is that awareness is starting to rise,” Obama said in an exclusive clip provided to CNN. “And, I’ll be honest with you, part of what’s starting to change is that the opioids crisis is getting into communities that are suburban, that are relatively well to do, rural communities, white communities, and people’s kids who are being affected are folks who have a voice.”

The President goes on to criticize the way America has dealt with addicts, suggesting that our current methods help push people further into their potentially fatal habits.

Add University of North Dakota to the list of colleges to never send your black sons and daughters to EVER…

According to Star Tribune reports:

University of North Dakota officials announced late Wednesday that they concluded an investigation into two racially charged Snapchat photos and that they have decided not to punish the students involved.

“After a full review of the information, the Code of Student Life and the laws pertaining to each incident, and after consulting with general counsel, [the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities] has concluded that neither incident constitutes a violation of the UND Code of Student Life,” the school wrote in a statement. The outcome was “driven by the Constitutional protection of free speech,” but officials wouldn’t disclose details of their findings.

SMH… Free Speech? And not a violation of the UND Code of Student Life? So we guess there are no rules in the Code of Student Life about not being a racist bigots who treat innocent people with zero regard.

Both incidents happened on Snapchat in September, just days apart.

The first involved three students who allegedly locked a black student out of a dorm and took a picture on her phone with the caption, “locked the black b**ch out.” And the second showed four students posing in blackface with the caption “Black lives matter.”

“As part of the conversation with student leaders, we talked about the concept of zero tolerance,” UND President Mark Kennedy said in a statement released following the investigation. “While I appreciate the desire for such a policy, it is unachievable under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”

Kennedy said that he was aware that students and other members of the community were hurt by the incidents and that he personally was “appalled” by the photos.

At least somebody is appalled at that school. We don’t understand how the damn school President can be APPALLED and want a zero tolerance policy. Pretty sure plenty of other schools don’t let Free Speech get in the way of acting a damn fool.

Significant Loss Of Life And Property As Haiti And U.S. Hit Hard By Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew has claimed the lives of almost 900 Haitians as hit made landfall this week.

According to a nurse working in Port-au-Prince who spoke to BBC, the island is almost completely destroyed.

“What we’ve seen thus far has been a fairly large-spread destruction in the south, potentially at points of 90% destruction in some of locations – complete destruction.”

Almost 900 souls have been claimed as a result of this wide-spread destruction.

At least 877 people were confirmed dead late on Friday, local officials told Reuters news agency.

One of the survivors in the village of Chantal told Reuters a tree had flattened his house.

“The entire house fell on us. I couldn’t get out,” Jean-Pierre Jean-Donald said.

“People came to lift the rubble, and then we saw my wife, who had died.”

Our prayers continue to go out to those are dealing with unimaginable grief at this time.

Stateside, Matthew hasn’t been quite as fatal, but lives have been lost and several states have suffered extensive damage according to DailyMail.

After killing six people in Florida and nearly 900 in Haiti, Matthew raked the Georgia and South Carolina coasts with torrential rain and stiff winds before touching down in McCleallanville, about 50 minutes from Charleston, just after 11am.

It has been estimated that Matthew will end up damaging roughly 1.5million residential and commercial properties in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Property data firm CoreLogic projects that the total damage will cost between $4billion and $6billion in insured losses, anticipating 90 percent of insurance claims will be attributed to storm surges and wind damage from the storm.

We are getting to the tail end of hurricane season, and we can only hope that nothing else pops off anytime soon.

Lupita Nyong’o Treats Headrwraps As Crowns

Y’all already know we love us some Lupita round here so we were happy to see she was featured in People Magazine speaking at length about her current obsession with rocking head wraps for her current press tour.

“Going with the theme of the movie, they are my crowns,” says the star, who also appears in Tiffany & Co.’s Legendary Style campaign this season (seen below). The Disney drama tells the inspiring true story of a Ugandan girl who becomes a chess champion. Nyong’o plays her mother, Nakku Harriet.

“It’s the quintessential African accessory,” she says of the look, noting that she loves to research different styles on Pinterest.

She works with her stylist, Micaela Erlanger, and her hairstylist, Vernon François, to customize each of the pieces. “It’s definitely teamwork to make the head wraps,” she says. “Micaela and I like to be inspired by the thing we’re promoting. So we find our own little secrets and sources of inspiration. So, for this film we’re inspired by the character I play.”

They source the fabrics themselves, too. “We use the fabric either from the designer that I am wearing or African fabrics that we sourced in east Africa and in the African fabric stores here in New York,” notes Nyong’o. “And it’s been lots of fun to work to create these crowns for my head and celebrate the release of this film.”
