Google’s #LoveLetters campaign seeks to highlight and uplift the voices of young people who have an incarcerated parent. Sadly, this phenomenon hits our community more than most:
The costs of mass incarceration have disproportionately affected the lives of Black men. From 1980 to 2007, about one in three of the 25.4 million adults arrested for drugs was African-American. And if that current trend continues, one in three Black boys born today can expect to spend time in prison during his lifetime. All in all, we’re now at a point where there are more African-American men incarcerated in the U.S. than the total prison populations of India, Argentina, Canada, Lebanon, Germany, Finland, Israel and England combined.
Great to see the love these children have for their fathers has prevailed through such circumstances.

More sad news for the music world, as another memorable name has passed on. 90’s kids will remember Attrell Cordes, one half of Hip-Hop/Soul brother duo P.M. Dawn best from their #1 smash hit “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss,” though their voices also popped up prominently on the “Boomerang” soundtrack and other radio singles. Via TMZ:
One half of P.M. Dawn … singer Attrell Cordes, who was best known as Prince Be … has died.
Cordes passed away Friday at his NJ home from renal kidney disease. He was 46.
PM Dawn, which also included Cordes’ brother, Jarrett, were huge in the early ’90s. They’re best known for their #1 hit “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss.”
It appears Cordes was also living with diabetes. A post on the group’s Facebook page read, “Prince Be Rest In Peace forever more, Pain from Diabetes can’t harm you anymore.”
2016 is just claiming life after life in sports and entertainment. May he rest in peace.

The nation has been enraged by Judge Aaron Persky’s decision to slap a rapist, Brock Turner, on the wrist with an incendiary 6-month prison sentence.
The folks at CNN got hold of the transcripts of the sentencing
In the sentencing transcripts from the June 2 hearing, defense attorney Mike Armstrong said Turner “has never denied” digitally penetrating the woman but “in his drunken state, he remembered consent.”
The judge appears to believe Turner, 20, as he explains his sentencing decision by saying, “I mean, I take him at his word that, subjectively, that’s his version of events. The jury, obviously, found it not to be the sequence of events.”
While clearly saying “it’s not an excuse,” Persky says Turner’s legal intoxication is “a factor that, when trying to assess moral culpability in this situation, is mitigating.”
As Persky laid out the reasoning behind his sentencing decision, he discussed the comparison of a sober defendant who commits assault with the intent to commit rape versus a defendant who is voluntarily intoxicated. Persky found “there is less moral culpability attached to the defendant who is legally intoxicated.”

Better late than never.
Sadly 2-year-old Lane Graves was killed this week after an alligator dragged him into the lagoon while he was playing at the water’s edge. There have been numerous debates over whether or not the Disney resort where he was staying is liable for his death but many folks have questioned why the hotel didn’t post signs warning of alligators since other nearby resorts have such signs.
Well, it looks like the Grand Floridian is now posting new alligator signs as a temporary solution while they work out a permanent, long-term solution.
Graves’ parents Matt and Melissa released the following statement regarding the death of their son:
“Words cannot describe the shock and grief our family is experiencing over the loss of our son. We are devastated and ask for privacy during this extremely difficult time. To all of the local authorities and staff who worked tirelessly these past 24 hours, we express our deepest gratitude.”

It looks like the IRS might be coming for that azz! Donald Trump is being accused of using his non-profit to propel his political campaign.
Federal law strictly prohibits utilizing non-profit organizations for any sort of presidential politics. In fact, the IRS states that non profits “are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign.” According to The Washington Post, Trump violated tax laws by giving away donation checks to veterans during presidential campaign events:
In Iowa, the oversize checks given to veterans’ groups often had the nonprofit’s name in one corner, and the campaign’s slogan on the bottom. At Trump Tower, Trump announced the gifts at a news conference dedicated mainly to his campaign, standing at a podium with the same campaign slogan: “Make America Great Again.”
The American Democracy Legal Fund led by Brad Woodhouse, is asking that the IRS open an investigation which could result in heavy tax penalties or the loss of The Trump Foundations’ non-profit status. Of course this investigation could go on for eons…

Attrell Cordes, who formed the hip-hop duo P.M. Dawn with his brother has died. His representative confirmed Cordes’ death on Saturday. “It’s true,” said Jeff Epstein, of Universal Attractions Agency in an email, responding to a query about the death. Also known by the name Prince Be, Their best-known song was the 1991 “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss.” The song, a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, was remade in 1997 by the Backstreet Boys.
