Black Actors Spoof Oscar-Nominated Films

We planned to change the channel following Chris Rock’s Academy Awards opening monologue BUT we happened to stick around long enough to watch some pretty funny spoofs of the films “The Revenant” (Leslie Jones played the bear), “The Martian” (Chris Rock played a black astronaut) and “The Danish Girl” with Tracy Morgan pretty much murking Eddie Redmayne’s role.

Tell the truth. Did you laugh?

During the 88th annual Academy Awards Stacey Dash made a surprise appearance that turned out to be easily the most awkward moment of the night.

“I can not wait to help my people out,” said Stacey with a giggle. “Happy Black History Month!”

WTF was that?!

Russell Wilson Founds Charity Clothing Line To Help Aid Inner-City Education

Russell Wilson is butt of many a joke these days, from his “cornball brotha” personality to his refusal to smash Ciara’s supple cakes to smithereens, but one thing you can’t knock him for is his community service.

The HuffingtonPost is reporting that Russell has started a clothing line that aims to helping kids learn. Gotta respect that, right?

Be good.

The words are easy to say, but harder to heed. So the 27-year-old NFL star, guided by his strong faith and devotion to inner-city communities, decided it was time to prove that he, too, was living by the motto.

That’s where the Good Man Brand came in. With the coolly confident goal of inspiring an entire generation, Russell Wilson is teaming up his Good Man Brand with his Why Not You Foundation to launch something they hope will better lives. Using a business model similar to that of TOMS — a company known for its policy of “buy-one, give-one” — Good Man Brand opens its doors with the promise that for every item sold, it will share its profits with a charity of choice.

The “Good Man Brand” is promising that $3 from every purchase will go to charity — and he’s committing now to assisting inner-city education, a cause personally selected by Wilson and his team for the tangible, immediate impact it can have on inner-city children all over the nation.

There are no details as to where you’ll be able to purchase Russell’s clothes at this time, but if you happen to see it while you’re shopping for Jordan’s, pick up a shirt or something and help a child in need.

Tarica June Takes On Gentrification In D.C. With Conscious Rhymes “But Anyway” [Video]

Y’all ready for a new female MC on the block?

DC Hip Hop Artist Tarica June premieres music video for the politically inspired single “But Anyway,” created over a patchwork of old school tracks utilizing the nostalgia of songs by Suzanne Vega, Eric B. & Rakim, and P.M. Dawn, cleverly illustrating the pangs of a city in deep socioeconomic flux
***

It’s no secret that the presence of the female emcee in the landscape of mainstream hip-hop culture is severely underrepresented. A culture that seems to undervalue the non-conforming female voice unwilling to bend to trends and commercial viability. But Washington, DC based hip hop artist Tarica June has a unique and celebrated skill set that undoubtedly gives her quite the edge on the competition, male and female. Her dossier flaunts high praises from the likes of seminal hip-hop artist Chuck D (Public Enemy) and upcoming collaborations with hip hop artist M-1 (Dead Prez). With an effortless flow that sits haughtily at the nexus of diverse influences such as Sonia Sanchez, Yasiin Bey, and T.I., it’s easy to see why media outlets called her debut “one of the most important projects in recent Hip Hop memory.” And with her upcoming EP Stream of Consciousness and full-length debut on the horizon, the rapper and Howard Law School graduate is destined to shatter stereotypes and transcend categorization in one fell swoop.

To satiate fans eagerly awaiting her follow up, Tarica releases “But Anyway,” a thoughtful and refreshingly honest take on DC’s current wave of gentrification. Over a patchwork old school track that utilizes the nostalgia of songs by Suzanne Vega, Eric B. & Rakim, and P.M. Dawn, “But Anyway” cleverly illustrates the pangs of a city in deep socioeconomic flux. The video, Tarica June’s directorial debut, is a colorful and celebratory collage of shots on the streets of her hometown that serves a dual purpose.

“Everybody knows that DC was the site of a crack epidemic. I definitely witnessed that growing up, so I won’t discount that. But there was also was a very potent sense of community here.”

The searing track “But Anyway” prompted an invite to perform for the delegation of the United Nationas Human Rights Council in early 2016. Her upcoming Stream Of Consciousness EP offers listeners an even more intimate peek into the mind of Tarica June with subtle hints about her forthcoming album. The city’s seismic cultural transition and shifting landscape caused Tarica to reflect on how to best preserve the memory of the city she calls home. Traveling in the same vein, another EP track “Four Unit (My Life)” finds Tarica discusses the pangs of an artist struggling to exist in a city with a soaring cost of living. The track “Uncompromised” is formulated as a push-back on the oft pedaled, well meaning, yet maligned advice that every female emcee likely knows all too well. The pulsing “S.O.C. (Cray)” is a trippy trap laden excursion where Tarica June rhythmically elaborates on her unique musical perspective. “The Cover Up” fashions a thought provoking commentary on how readily society constructs facades in the age of social media – in effect making us less social while normalizing a contrived existence via artificial intelligence. With her guitar and her experiences as her mediums of choice, Tarica June aims to paint an unbridled lyrical portrait steered by authentic sound and vision. At this point in her career, she is well aware of the boxes that categorize her. As an emcee, a conscious rapper, and a female artist.

    More About Tarica June:

Raised in the nation’s capital, Tarica June was reared under the musical influence of her father, a jazz aficionado, her mother, who played Bob Marley daily, and her generation’s chosen mode of fearless expression: hip hop. Away from home in high school, Tarica June was exposed to a new musical vernacular as she found her hip hop heroes juxtaposed with the music of her dorm mates in the form of Tracy Chapman, Grateful Dead, and U2. She began to further expand on her musical tastes in college. Yet unbeknownst to her classmates, she was simultaneously honing a nascent talent that she’d kept hidden for years.

Upon graduation, Tarica June relocated back to DC where she found a burgeoning community of Black artists in the midst of a renaissance aptly dubbed The Movement. After one of these musicians used a song that she had written without crediting her, Tarica June decided to attend law school. “I figured that as a creative person I should learn my rights because I saw how easy it is to get taken advantage of if you don’t know the law” she explains. She enrolled at Howard University School of Law, where she focused on intellectual property.

While in law school she continued to work on her music, and in 2010 Tarica June bowed with the release of her bold debut mixtape Moonlight Revolution. Waxing poetic over a diverse array of instrumentals from top 40 hits by artists such as Common, 50 Cent, and U2, Moonlight Revolution finds Tarica June firmly establishing herself as a formidable solo artist wielding her dynamic lyrical torch to illuminate a bleak space. Embroidered with nods and references to lauded writer Ntozake Shange as well as trailblazing recording artists Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, Moonlight Revolution was a bold proclamation of fortitude from agile mind of a new, independent, Black female hip-hop artist.

Moonlight Revolution struck a chord, putting Tarica June on the radar of various media outlets and festival organizers. Respected website Soul Bounce featured the album in their Bounce-Worthy section, calling Tarica “young, fresh and talented.” HipHopDX wrote an exhilarating, heartfelt 1,700 word editorial in response to Moonlight Revolution, calling it “the logical manifestations of a free mind” and “one of the most important projects in recent Hip Hop memory.”

Race Matters: “Hate In America” Set To Premiere On Investigation Discovery Tonight [Video]

Now more than ever it seems like we need a show like this to shine a light on some of the ugliest events in American history.

Investigation Discovery (ID) and Emmy Award-winning journalist Tony Harris are teaming up once again with premiere civil rights advocacy organization, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), to produce HATE IN AMERICA, a new documentary strand that showcases the SPLC’s efforts to combat bigotry and hate groups in the United States. The mission of the SPLC and its legendary founder, Morris Dees, are to combat the hate, intolerance and discrimination perpetuated by these groups through education, litigation and advocacy.

According to the SPLC’s 2015 Intelligence Report, the number of extremist groups operating domestically grew by 14% from 2014, and the SPLC catalogued an astounding 892 hate groups in the US, including neo-Nazis, white nationalists, black separatists, Klansmen and other groups that target the LGBT community. Produced by NBC News’ award-winning production arm Peacock Productions, the documentary series HATE IN AMERICA kicks off with its first premiere on Monday, February 29 at 8/7c, showcasing the SPLC’s remarkable strides to fight organized hate over the past four decades.

In the first episode of HATE IN AMERICA, titled The Klan on Trial, Harris explores some of the SPLC’s most riveting court cases, starting with the Michael Donald case – a heinous lynching of a young man in the early 1980s that prompted SPLC founder Morris Dees to sue the United Klans of America (UKA) on behalf of the victim’s mother. In this landmark court decision, the UKA’s violent leadership was held responsible for the unspeakably violent and racist acts of its members, helping to turn the tide against organized hate in our country. Harris also digs deep into the deeds of notorious white supremacist murderer Glenn Miller, who most recently made national headlines when he went on a shooting spree at a Kansas Jewish Community Center in April 2014.

The first episode of HATE IN AMERICA, The Klan on Trial premieres on Monday, February 29 at 8/7c on Investigation Discovery, with subsequent premieres airing throughout 2016.

Katt Williams Arrested In Georgia

Just hours after causing a social media stir over calling Kevin Hart out for not “keeping it real” with the Oscars, keeping it real went extra wrong — yet again — for Katt Williams. The often-arrested funnyman got popped by police at a pool supply store (of all places) after the cashier managed to get him irate enough to throw hands. Via TMZ:

Katt Williams is sitting in a Georgia jail cell after getting busted for hitting a store clerk … TMZ has learned.

Police tell us Katt was arrested Monday at a pool supply store in Gainesville, GA. Officers say Katt had a verbal altercation with an employee and it escalated when he threw an object … and then punched the employee.

Katt, who’s had his fair share of arrests, assumed the position — cops say he was on the ground with his hands behind his back … ready to be cuffed when they arrived.

Katt was released on $5,000 bail.

Katt already knew what time it was when the cops pulled up. WELP — If you ever want to pinpoint the big difference between comedians like Katt Williams and comedians like Kevin Hart…you can refer to incidents like this.

50 Cent’s Assets Revealed In Bankruptcy Case

Even though 50 has been working hard to convince the courts that he’s too poor to pay his debts while still flaunting stacks of cash for his social media fans…the truth is in his accounts. Millions and millions of truths…

Via MailOnline:

Bankrupt rapper 50 Cent is far from broke. In fact, he is still extremely rich.

New bankruptcy documents obtained exclusively by Daily Mail Online reveal he has more than $64 million in assets and property.

50 Cent, who’s real name is Curtis James Jackson III, filed bankruptcy last June days after a New York jury awarded fellow rapper Rick Ross’ baby mama, Lastonia Leviston, $7 million in a legal battle over her leaked sex tape. Which he has yet to fork over. The 40-year-old rapper also lost a legal battle with his ex-business partners over a failed headphone deal and was slapped with a $17 million judgement in that case.

According to his Chapter 11 petition, Fifty claimed he had assets between $10 to $50 million but that his liabilities were in the same range.

Last month, he filed documents in the bankruptcy stating he only had $16 million in assets.

However, it appears appraisers checked into it all – and found his assets total over $64 million and that he only has liabilities totaling more than $36 million.

In addition, 50 Cent’s current monthly income is $184,000-plus. The appraisers also valued his home goods to $131,000 including $49,000 in jewelry alone.

Appraisers found he has over $10 million in checking and stocks as well as his various G-Unit and other business’ which are worth over $44 million.

Welp…that sounds like more than enough to pay the people he supposedly owes. But 50 seems to have tons of tricks up his sleeve to avoid coughing up the cash…

Frank Ocean Song Clips Leak Online

Is Frank Ocean’s much rumored and often pushed back album Boys Don’t Cry FINALLY on its way to release? Fans haven’t heard much from Frank since Channel Orange back in 2012…and aside from the odd rumor here and there and a random reemergence on Kanye’s latest project, it’s been quiet for him.

But now it appears as if the reclusive singer may be ready to drop his first new project in four years — once a select few people give their input, of course. Word on the street says that Frank held a super top-secret album listening event in an as-yet-unknown city. But apparently it wasn’t secret enough, because some sneaky one caught audio clips from the track(s) on their phone and leaked it to the world. Take a listen:

Hmmm…not that you could hear much, but did you like what you picked up? Do you think this album is actually on the way???
