A federal grand jury indicted four St. Bernard Parish Prison employees in the death last year of inmate Nimali Henry. Nimali was found dead in her jail cell after she was unable to raise $25,000 bail and denied medication while locked up.
According to NOLA reports:
The indictment accuses Andre Dominick, Timothy Williams, Debra Becnel and Lisa Vaccarella of failing to provide proper medication and treatment to Henry, who suffered from a rare blood disorder.
All four defendants also are accused of civil rights violations, as well as making false statements to the FBI. They have been placed on indefinite administrative leave, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann said.
The accused correctional officers have been named for the first time with the indictment, which came about eight months after the FBI intervened in a civil rights lawsuit against the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office.
The civil suit, filed by the father of Henry’s baby daughter on the daughter’s behalf, was put on hold pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
None of the defendants could be reached Thursday evening at publicly listed phone numbers. Court records do not list their attorneys.
Henry was found face down in an isolation cell in April 2014. A coroner’s report found she likely died of a blood clot. In addition to the civil rights charges, the indictment accuses all four defendants of providing false statements to the FBI.

A man shot while walking away from two Los Angeles County deputies tried crawling away before succumbing to his gunshot wounds Saturday morning, according to a video of the shooting.
The two deputies fired more than a dozen shots at the allegedly armed man as he walked away and continued to do so after knocking him to the ground, according to video shared with KTLA-TV.
Several calls to 911 said a black male wearing a checkered shirt had brandished a handgun and fired shots at several locations before 11 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.
In a video shot from a nearby restaurant, he appears to calmly walk away seconds before deputies opened fire. The suspect allegedly refused to drop a weapon and pointed it at the officers before being shot, police said citing investigators and witnesses.
Anti-police brutality protesters rallied around Robertson, a father of three children, at the site of his death where police stood by wearing riot gear and ready to use tear gas.

According to Gulf News reports a Muslim woman was sworn in as a judge in NYC using the Holy Quran.
Carolyn Walker-Diallo was sworn in as a civil judge for the 7th Municipal District at the Brooklyn Burough Hall, New York, after being elected last month.
Walker-Diallo began her legal career as a litigation associate at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy LLP, according to her website.
She says she saw her parents play a proactive role in the East New York and Cypress Hills communities. Walker-Diallo walked the family’s path of “being the change we want to see in the world” when she assumed charge of a community-based non-profit, named after her father, The George Walker Jr Community Coalition, Inc.
She combined her passion for the law and for the community by creating the East New York Youth Court, which trains youth aged 13-18 to serve as judges, attorneys, clerks, bailiffs and jurors in real cases involving their peers.
The first Muslim woman judge in the United States is Sheila Abdus-Salaam, an African-American who still sits on the New York State Supreme Court. She was first appointed to the bench in 1992.
Another Arab-American, Charlene Mekled Elder, was appointed to the 3rd Circuit Court of Wayne County in Michigan in 2006.
A few years ago, the state of California and New Jersey also appointed their first Muslim judges.
California appointed Halim Dhanidina, whose parents emigrated from Tanzania to the United States in the mid-1960s. He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.

Authorities were called to investigate food served in the teacher’s lounge area of a suburban Detroit school, after 3 staff members complained of food poisoning. One of the three educators visited the hospital, we they were told they tested positive for marijuana.
The remaining brownies were tested after police were notified and positively contained marijuana.
Schools officials from the district say they are working with law enforcement to determine who brought the brownies to school. District officials say they don’t know whether they were put out intentionally or brought by mistake, according to the Chicago Tribune.

From the first time Christian children settle into Sunday school classrooms, an image of Jesus Christ is etched into their minds. In North America he is most often depicted as being taller than his disciples, lean, with long, flowing, light brown hair, fair skin and light-colored eyes. Familiar though this image may be, it is inherently flawed.
A person with these features and physical bearing would have looked very different from everyone else in the region where Jesus lived and ministered. Surely the authors of the Bible would have mentioned so stark a contrast. On the contrary, according to the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane before the Crucifixion, Judas Iscariot had to indicate to the soldiers whom Jesus was because they could not tell him apart from his disciples. Further clouding the question of what Jesus looked like is the simple fact that nowhere in the New Testament is Jesus described, nor have any drawings of him ever been uncovered.
There is the additional problem of having neither a skeleton nor other bodily remains to probe for DNA. In the absence of evidence, our images of Jesus have been left to the imagination of artists. The influences of the artists’ cultures and traditions can be profound, observes Carlos F. Cardoza-Orlandi, associate professor of world Christianity at Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta.
“While Western imagery is dominant, in other parts of the world he is often shown as black, Arab or Hispanic.” And so the fundamental question remains: What did Jesus look like?
