BOSSIP Exclusive: “Chicago PD” Stars LaRoyce Hawkins And Jon Seda Speak On The Importance Of Depicting Cops With Character

NBC Chicago PD LaRoyce Hawkins Jon Seda

Last week BOSSIP took part in NBC Chicago Day — a very special day long media event where we were able to meet with many of the stars of Dick Wolf’s windy city themed drama series’. The event also served as a great opportunity to celebrate new seasons of “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD” as well as to welcome the newest addition “Chicago Med”,” which launches Tuesday November 17 at 9pm.

After enjoying a brief breakfast, we had the chance to sit down with a number of cast members. One of our favorite interviews was with LaRoyce Hawkins (Officer Kevin Atwater) and Jon Seda (Officer Antonio Dawson). The pair shared their insight on how the show has helped reinforce positive images of police officers amid a current climate that doesn’t see law enforcement in the best light.

NBC Chicago PD LaRoyce Hawkins

“For me it’s a responsibility,” Hawkins shared during a roundtable discussion. “Especially playing a police officer who has integrity. We’re grateful to be playing cops who have great character because those have to be depicted more. I come from a place where you didn’t respect cops, especially in Harvey (Ill.)because you looked up to the dope dealer more. You kinda knew what he was about because the cops came at weird angles at times. I didn’t grow up empathizing with police until I got this job and came into contact with some great people. So now I think at least I have personally taken some responsibility to bridge that gap between some of the misunderstandings between the hood and the law because that’s all it really is. It’s misunderstandings, it’s miscommunications, it’s miseducation and thankfully we play characters who can bridge that gap.”

Seda cosigned his castmate’s comments, adding “I look at the police force like I would look at a family. We can all say there is at least one bad apple in every family. But does that bad apple represent your whole family? I’ve got some cousins that I don’t want you to look at and say they represent the family. I don’t even trust them. That said, the police force as an entirety shouldn’t be represented by – a few unfortunately terrible individual cases.”

While on set, we had a chance to watch the actors run through an improvised scene where they knock down a door to interrupt a party where a wanted criminal is hiding out. The actors credited police consultant Brian Luce for their realistic depictions of Chicago police officers.

“It’s tough but for us trying to make it as authentic and real as we can makes it unique because we are willing to push the envelope farther than you may have seen on other shows,” Seda explained. “We still have room to grow. Like LaRoyce was saying we have technical advisors like Brian Luce who are constantly saying, “well there is this, here’s what happened this time…” and the writers say how far can we go? Can we actually show this? How much is the audience ready to see? So I think it’s an amazing job the producers do to find that fine line between it’s Hollywood and still depicting real people that are in our everyday lives. We’re very proud to be part of this. We went from Fire to TV and now Med.”

Exciting stuff right??? Hawkins also admitted that he’s a bit of an adrenaline junkie who is living out his childhood dreams taking on such an active role:

“I love it,” Hawkins told BOSSIP. “I used to want to be a Ninja Turtle when I grew up. So I was always just beating people up in my imagination. Everything I get to do now I used to do in my imagination. Me and my cousins, I was Michaelangelo and everything I do now – kicking people, throwing them into aquariums. I’m glad they let me actually do it.”

Pretty funny stuff. Hit the flip for more.

Livin’ With Regrets: President Obama Admits That He Could Have Handled Ferguson Protests Better

President Obama Talks To GQ About Handling Things Differently In Ferguson

The POTUS. The Commander-In-Chief. The Boss. The Man. The most powerful brotha on Earth. President Barack Obama recent sat down to talk to GQ about the last 7 years that he has been a resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., 20500.

In the interview he disclosed some of his Presidential regrets and things he would like to go back and do over. Namely, the handling of the events in Ferguson, Missouri following the police shooting of an unarmed teenager named Michael Brown…

When Ferguson happened last year, I was waiting for Obama the Person to come in. But you had to be President Obama. How you handled Charleston this year and Selma—that was Obama the Person. So what happened with Ferguson? Do you wish you had handled that differently?

You know, the challenge of Ferguson and all issues related to police shootings, race, and the criminal-justice system is that in order to actually get something done, you have to build consensus. Expressing simple outrage without follow-up is often counterproductive. In the case of Ferguson, I’m the attorney general’s boss. If I chime in with a strong opinion about what’s happened, not only do I stand to potentially damage subsequent law-enforcement cases, but immediately you get blowback and backlash that may make people less open to listening. What was different in Charleston was the clarity of what happened—that allowed, I think, everybody to be open to it.

Did it take time during the presidency to realize what kind of moments those were?

Yes, sometimes it’s feel. Sometimes the circumstances won’t give you a clean statement. The fact that race has always been the fault line of our society and has always distorted our politics—that is not subject to argument. Part of what you’re looking for is a way not to just vent but to actually move the people. I practiced law for a while—a lot of times, hard cases can make bad law. If you have an issue that you want to put forward, you’re looking for the right plaintiff and the right court to appear before. I do think as you go on as president, you get a better feel for this, but you’re not always going to be perfect. When the Trayvon Martin case happened, I had an honest response as a father that I think resonated with a lot of people. When Ferguson happened, there was a gap between how quickly we could pull together a police task force, recommendations. And so in that lag, it feels as if I haven’t spoken to the moment as effectively. I suspect that if I were to do it over again, there might be something I could say that would’ve crystallized it more effectively. But Ferguson—the case itself was tougher because people didn’t know what was going on exactly. In some ways the [Eric] Garner case in New York was clearer because you had on videotape exactly what had happened, and some of the subsequent cases have been more obvious.

The remainder of the interview is very insightful and intimate, we suggest reading the rest HERE

D.A. May Charge Lamar Odom With Possession Of Cocaine Following Brothel Overdose

According to TMZ, Nye County D.A. Angelo Bello is close to filing charges against Lamar Odom for his possession of cocaine and or being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Research shows that there has never, repeat NEVER, been a person prosecuted after overdosing and being hospitalized.

At this point Lamar has almost died, being hooked to tubes, spent time in 2 hospitals, can barely speak, walk, or recognize his family and the D.A. STILL wants to hit him with charges???

Isn’t that a bit excessive? What good does that serve Lamar or the public at large?

The D.A.’s office maintains that Lamar is not being railroaded because of his public persona, but if no one has EVER been charged under these circumstances before, what the big f***ing deal?

Do you think that Lamar deserves to be treated like a criminal or is his overdose punishment enough?

Poor NeNe…

NeNe Leakes Blasts The View Hosts For Being “Mean Girls”

NeNe Leakes appeared on “The View” today and was apparently none too pleased with how she was treated by the cohosts. The former RHOA star stopped by and spoke on a number of topics including her departure from reality TV and her new mansion.

On her decision not to return for season 8:

Well I felt like season 7 was really hard… I felt like there were times that I was really ganged up on.

It’s not cool. It’s not fair for everybody to come at you at once, for everybody to try to make you appear you’re something that you’re not.

On if she’ll ever return to RHOA:

Maybe, maybe not. The Housewives has been very good to me. It has been amazing and it has opened up many doors for me. As you can see… lots of girls would like to imitate the Nene Leakes brand, you know what I mean.

Nene Leakes The View 2Joy Behar then states, “She’s very humble isn’t she? I see why you like Donald Trump.” to which Leakes responds… “I didn’t say I was voting for him hunni, I said I liked him.”

NeNe later tweeted and deleted that she felt like the hosts were being “mean girls” to her…

Mattel Features First Boy In Barbie Commercial

For the first time ever, a major corporation has marketed their doll for both boys and girls. Even though the ad is more of a tongue-in-cheek throwback to the 90’s Barbie commercials, a lot of parents are noting that the little boy in the ad is a little too…um…whimsical for their taste, and calling it inappropriate and pushing some “gay agenda.” Others are noting that it plays into gay stereotypes, since the little boy was extra effeminate and used the word “fierce.”

Meanwhile, we’re just wondering who is really giving their kids a $150 (reselling on Ebay for $400-$800) limited edition designer collector’s item Barbie to unbox and play with?

What do you think??
