Tony Elumelu Launches $100 Million Program To Help Black Businesses

Tony Elumelu, an attributed philanthropist and African billionaire has just launched a program to help African American businesses under his Toney Elumelu Foundation according to Financial Juneteenth:

In 2014, Elumelu, along with other prominent American and African business moguls, partnered to form a summit in Washington DC that consisted of more than 45 African and American business heads, along with 50 African business leaders. The common theme of the platform was to see to the improvement in the economic stance of Africans, as well as African-Americans, and to create advancement opportunities for all who interacted.

The vision set forth by Tony Elumelu is one that he believes merges more than simple aid; it creates a solid partnership between Africa and the U.S. It’s the beginning of a business journey that takes a different, but more rewarding, path for all of those invested. The trip to Africa taken by President Obama was another key indicator that steps are being taken in the right directions to strengthen business ventures between Africa and America.

These attempts coexist with The Tony Elumelu Foundation as it extends its principles for growth to businesses owned or started by women and minorities. The most significant move, by far, is the entrepreneurship program that The Tony Elumelu Foundation will spearhead. It is designed on a financial standing of $100,000,000 to be disbursed among entrepreneurs throughout the U.S and Africa.

This newly formed relationship between Africa and the U.S is one that can create a positive mode of growth for African American entrepreneurs who stay the course and take the route the foundation has designed.

Texas Councilman Jonatan Miller Tasered

A Texas councilman is making national headlines after he says he was unlawfully tasered outside his home.

Jonathan Miller was arrested October 8 in Prairie View, Texas when officers stopped to question four men at his house in area where there was “drug activity.”

After Miller says he stepped outside to defuse the situation, he was tasered by two officers–one of which is believed to have been involved in the arrest of Sandra Bland.

Today.com reports:

“I don’t feel like I did any of the things that I’m accused of,” councilman Jonathan Miller told NBC News. “I don’t feel like I should have been detained, or you know, arrested or anything.”

Dramatic videos taken by one of Miller’s friends and the body camera worn by one of the police officers shows Miller, 26, being taken down by a Taser on Oct. 8.

The incident involved a Prairie View officer with ties to Sandra Bland, who was found dead in her jail cell this summer.

Miller insists he did nothing wrong, while police say he was Tasered for failing to comply with their orders.

Police say they were on a routine patrol when they stopped at Miller’s house and approached four men for questioning in an area they say has often been found to be involved with drug activity.

In the video, a male and female officer try to get him to put his hands behind his back and he refuses before being Tasered.

“I knew the officer, (and) she knew me, so I figured if I let her know these are my guests, (it would) kind of lessen the tension,” Miller said.

Miller has been charged with interfering with police and resisting arrest.

The police are promising a full investigation.

Woman Shoots Driver After Getting Hit In With Slurpee During Fight

A 36-year-old Michigan woman was arraigned Wednesday on assault, weapons and drug charges after she allegedly fired a shot at a man during an apparent road rage incident.

Via Detroit News:

Harrison Township resident India Marchea McDougal told deputies she opened fire after the man exited his 2003 Chevy pickup during an altercation in Harrison Township, approached her vehicle and tossed liquid in her face, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

She was charged in 41B District Court with assault with intent to murder, felony firearm and possession of less than 25 grams of a controlled substance.

Deputies found numerous bottles of prescription narcotics inside her vehicle, said Lt. John Michalke, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

McDougal faces life in prison on the assault charge. She received a bond of $750,000 cash or surety at arraignment and is due back in court Oct. 26.

The woman was arrested around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday after a 40-year-old male driver called 911 to report that a female motorist in a 2004 Lexus SUV opened fire following an argument while stopped at a red light on Crocker at Metropolitan Parkway, officials said.

McDougal also called police after the incident and said she opened fire because she was “scared for her life” after the man exited his truck, approached her car holding a Styrofoam cup and tossed liquid in her face.

The man, a Warren resident, told police the altercation began when he “exchanged words” with McDougal a few blocks north at Crocker and Reimold, before both motorists proceeded to the red light.

The complainant told authorities he exited his truck to confront McDougal about her driving. He said he remained on the driver’s side of his vehicle until the argument escalated and he returned to his vehicle.

Lamar Odom Reacts To Seeing The Kardashian/Jenners In The Hospital

Remember when we told you that Lamar Odom was in and out of a coma in a Nevada hospital but got a recent visit from his kids who were all smiles?

Well the athlete whose condition is on the mend, is still being comforted by his family members as well as his estranged wife Khloe Kardashian who’s apparently so concerned about his health that she “hasn’t left his side” and sleeps on a pullout bed next to him.

People Magazine reports:

While Lamar Odom’s condition has been improving he still remains in ICU after waking up from his four-day coma on Friday, a source tells PEOPLE.

“Lamar today again has had moments when he is awake and more responsive,” the source says. “He is still in the ICU, is receiving oxygen and sleeps a lot. He is not talking, but seems to understand when Khloé and the medical staff speak to him. He will have another head MRI in the next few days to check for any damage that could have been caused by the strokes.

“Khloé still hasn’t left his side and looks very tired,” the source adds. “As soon as Lamar wakes up, she rushes over to hold his hand. She sleeps on a pullout bed next to Lamar.”

And as Khloe continues to lay by his bedside, her Kardashian family members are staying close by as well.

Even as memes circulate online claiming that Lamar would be distraught to see the reality TV clan by his side…

Police Charge Australian Mom Blogger For Poisoning Ill Child With Urine And Laxatives For Sympathy

A woman who blogged about her family life and chronicled her daughter’s “rare genetic disorder” has been charged with poisoning her own kid for blog views.

The woman can’t be named for legal reasons and her site has since been pulled from the internet. ABC News Australia reports that during a 24-hour period around March 11, a mixture of yeast and fungus grew in one of the tubes that made up the daughter’s venous line, in a way that indicated contamination by urine. Police allegedly found syringes, urine samples and laxatives in the woman’s handbag and investigators believe they have medical evidence going back to 2008. Police will use this as evidence against the mother.

During the period in which the mother documented her daughter’s hospital visits, the two gained recognition from several charities and even had large posters of the child lining the local airport.

Black Oakland Church Gets $500-A-Day Fine After Neighbors Complain

The city of Oakland is threatening to impose $500-a-day fines on a church that has long served Black residents in Oakland after a neighbor complained that the late-night noise of the church choir was too loud.

Via SF Gate reports:

Pastor Thomas A. Harris III of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church said he was surprised to receive a letter from the city’s nuisance abatement division on Aug. 31, saying the “excessive noise” of organ, drums and amplified vocals during the church’s weekly choir rehearsals is a nuisance to neighbors — and violates city law.

According to the letter, the church could be hit with a $3,529 initial fine, and penalties of $500 a day, until it abates the noise.

“This is strange,” Harris said, adding that it’s “quite unheard of for a church to be fined because of joyful noise.

The problem, according to a copy of the complaint to the city, is that the loud music goes on sometimes until 2 a.m. The copy of the complaint was sent to the local NAACP head, George Holland, but excluded the name of the person who complained, self-described as an 11-year resident of West Oakland who had never had problems with the church noise until 2014.

Harris said the choir practice ends at 9 p.m. He also said he didn’t know which of his neighbors complained but assumed the person must be a newcomer to the area.

“We’ll try to work with the community,” he said. “We don’t want to disrespect them, but we don’t want to be disrespected.”

During one particularly joyful week in August, the peal of gospel music resounded “around the radius of the church” and could be heard from half a block away on all sides, according to a diagram the neighbor sent to city officials.

Lamar Odom To Undergo Extensive Rehab To Recover From Organ Failure And Brain Trauma

While Lamar Odom continues to recover after being found unconscious inside of a Nevada brothel, the former NBA baller has yet another challenge awaiting him once he regains his strength.

According to a E!Online report Lamar is still completely unable to stand up on his own nor with the help of the medical staff.

On the brighter side, “Lammy’s” recent CT scan came back with no complications, he is breathing on his own, and he is able to swallow and move his limbs. The neurologist and cardiologist who are working with Lamar are mainly concerned about his cognition as time progresses.

It also appears that Odom will undergo physical, speech, and other forms of therapy for several months and even then, doctors believe some of the damage done will be permanent.

Khloe Kardashian has been steadfast by her estranged husband’s side ever since the news broke.

Less Frequent Pap Smear Recommendations Result In Drop In STI Screenings

Similar to the guidelines recently introduced in the U.S., which advise women ages 21 to 30 to get Pap tests every three years instead of annually, Canada also announced recommendations for less frequent Pap exams. According to Glamour, a small study that was conducted on 200 Canadian women ages 19 to 25 after the guidelines were introduced revealed that some women became quite lackadaisical in regard to their sexual health. Apparently, many were relieved that they no longer had to undergo Pap testing annually, and the rate of testing decreased by 60 percent. Unfortunately, screenings for sexually transmitted diseases and infections also dropped by 50 percent as a result of the new recommendations…
