Breaking News: President Obama Grants Clemency To Nearly Two Dozen Federal Inmates

President Obama Gives Second Chance To Prisoners Whose Sentences Would Be 10 Years Shorter Today

President Obama Tuesday commuted the sentences of 22 federal inmates mostly locked up on drug charges.

White House lawyer Neil Eggleston announced the President’s surprise move on the White House blog, explaining that Obama wanted to address unfair sentencing guidelines.

In some cases, the former prisoners served 10 years longer than they would have if they were sentenced today. Obama wrote letters to each of the 22 prisoners, telling them that their clemency was a second chance.

“I am granting your application, because you have demonstrated the potential to turn your life around,” Obama wrote to federal prisoner Terry Andre Barnes. “Now it is up to you to make the most of this opportunity. It will not be easy, and you will confront many who doubt people with criminal records can change. Perhaps even you are unsure of how you will adjust to your new circumstances.”

“But remember that you have the capacity to make good choices,” Obama wrote. “By doing so, you will affect not only your own life, but those close to you. You will also influence, through your example, the possibility that others in your circumstances get their own second chance in the future.”

In order to be eligible for presidential clemency, a prisoner must be serving a federal sentence; serving a sentence that, if handed down today, would be shorter, have a nonviolent history and no gang ties and have served at least 10 years, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Obama’s decision comes on the heels of launching a clemency initiative to urge prisoners who feel they were unfairly sentenced to ask for leniency.

Prisoner’s rights advocates praised the President’s decision.
“For far too long, this nation went down the road of locking up non-violent offenders and throwing away the keys, without any regard for value of these people and the damage that mass incarceration does to families, communities and to our entire society,” Clemency Project 2014 Project Manager Cynthia W. Roseberry said.

“Empire” Actress Claims Black People In America Have Different Skin Color Issues Than Islanders

Y’all remember Grace Gealey, aka Anika Calhoun aka Boo Boo Kitty on “Empire,” right?

In an interview with Details Gealey revealed some things about her move to the U.S. that some folks might find startling:

DETAILS: You moved to the U.S. when you were 18. What surprised you the most about American women?
Grace Gealey: For me personally, it’s the whole light-skinned/dark-skinned dynamic [for women of color]. I mean, there’s competition among women everywhere you go. But back home we understand that you can look like a variety of things and still be from the same culture. What I’m saying is that I’ve never felt like I was a light-skinned black woman. Never felt that way because we shared the same culture back home. But when I came to America, that’s when I started to feel that there was a lot of push-back from women. I was definitely made aware that I am light-skinned. I realized that was a thing here.

DETAILS: What kind of thing?
Grace Gealey: It was something that people felt the need to point out. I guess maybe it’s a form of intra racism: I was discriminated against for being light-skinned and there were a lot of labels. Some people assumed that guys might like me more because of my complexion or that I had it easier in general. Which is funny because I’ve been a victim of prejudice as well: There were times when I have walked into a Rite Aid at 12 o’clock at night and had the store manager stand in the corner and stare at me while I was looking at nail polishes.

Interesting. We wonder if darker complected women from the Cayman Islands feel the same way. This may have been Gealey’s experience but considering some of the issues with skin bleaching that exist in Africa and other parts of the diaspora we’d be surprised to find that America is the worst when it comes to the skin color complex. What do you think about Gealey’s reveal?

Probably our favorite part of the Details interview had to be to hear Gealey talk about her family. Another surprising fact about her when you hit the flip.

BOSSIP Exclusive: He’s Been Served!!! Why Was Tyga Slapped With Legal Papers At Sneaker Launch?

Kylie Jenner joins Tyga and his entourage after his 'Between The Sheets' tour stop with Chris Brown and Trey Songz at The Forum in Inglewood.

Rapper Served With Legal Papers At Sneaker Launch That May Be Part Of Upcoming Stolen Artwork Trial

The real reason Tyga got served with legal papers at his sneaker launch may have to do with his upcoming trial over claims he stole artwork.

A process server reportedly waited more than two hours in line to slap Tyga with legal papers at the launch of his new sneaker Wednesday night at Shiekh Shoes in Hollywood.

The legal papers may be linked to his upcoming copyright infringement trial he and Shiekh Shoes are facing this summer, Bossip has learned.

Graphic artist Glennon Marrero sued Tyga, real name Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson, claiming Tyga stole his pharaoh design and used it on his “Lost Kings” line of hats and T-Shirts without Marrero’s permission and when confronted, wouldn’t cough up a dime.

Tyga countersued Marrero, claiming they agreed Marrero created the designs in exchange for a 25 percent stake in the company. Marrero then flaked out and stopped returning calls, Tyga says in court papers.

Marrero’s lawsuit seeks all profits from the “Lost Kings” line with the logo and legal fees.

The case will head to trial June 9 in L.A. Superior Court.

Can’t Be Serious: GA Teen Who Received Controversial Heart Transplant Dies In Police Chase

Heart Transplant Recipient Dies In Police Chase

Remember when we told you about that dying GA teen who was initially denied a heart transplant because of his run-ins with the law???

Well he unfortunately passed away Tuesday while evading police after he allegedly committed a burglary and carjacking.

The AJC reports:

A troubled teenager who received a controversial heart transplant less than two years ago died Tuesday after he lost control of his car during a high-speed chase with Roswell police.

Anthony Stokes, 17, of Decatur, was also a suspect in a failed burglary and a carjacking, which police believe were linked to the fatal crash of the black Honda Accord on Ga 9, Officer Lisa Holland said.

Stokes made international news in August 2013 after the media reported that Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston had not put him on a transplant list.

His mother, Melencia Hamilton, then told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that hospital officials stereotyped her son, who wore a court-ordered monitoring device, as a troubled teen.

At the time Stokes was diagnosed, doctors said he would die within six to nine months without a transplant, Hamilton said. The hospital reversed course and Stokes received a heart after his mother and critics from civil rights organizations contended he was denied the heart because he was poor, black and had trouble with the law, which his mother said was for fighting.

Channel 2 Action News reported Tuesday night that it had confirmed that Stokes was the same Anthony Stokes who died after fleeing police following a carjacking and a burglary.

An elderly Roswell woman told the news station Stokes shot at her — pointing to bullet holes in her walls — after he kicked in her door and found her inside watching television.

SMH…this is a crying shame.

Bucknell University Students Expelled Over Racist Remarks

Three Pennsylvania college students were expelled from school after they made disgustingly racist remarks including “lynch ‘em” and “black people should be dead” over a radio broadcast.

The Huffington Post reports:

A private Pennsylvania college expelled three students over a campus radio broadcast in which they made racist comments and used a slur.

Bucknell University president John Bravman met with about 1,000 students and staff about the matter on Tuesday, a day after sending a late-night email revealing the expulsions.

“Their conduct is an affront to our values, damaging to our community and in clear violation of our community standards,” he wrote to students, faculty and staff on Monday.

Bravman did not identify the students but shared their comments from a March 20 WVBU-FM broadcast in “the interest of transparency and candor.”

He said one of the students used the N-word, a second said “black people should be dead” and the third said “lynch ‘em.”

Bucknell spokesman Andy Hirsch said an inmate a nearby prison heard the comments and reported them to a prisoner advocacy group, the Lewisburg Prison Project. The group then contacted a university faculty member, who alerted the radio station’s adviser.

Hirsch said the school’s senior staff investigated. The students were suspended and interviewed before the dean of students expelled them, he said.

“I would emphasize that the context really doesn’t matter once you see what was said,” Hirsch said.

Hirsch declined to say if alcohol was involved, noting the investigation is not complete.

“I can tell you that there were other people at the station,” he said. “Whether or not they were there at the time when this happened, we’re still looking into all those details.”

Bucknell, a liberal arts school with about 3,600 undergraduates, is located in Lewisburg, about 50 miles north of Harrisburg. The student body is 79 percent white, 5 percent Hispanic, 4 percent Asian and 3 percent African-American.

The Lewisburg Prison Project said an inmate at the federal penitenary in Lewisburg wrote a letter about the comments.

“He didn’t feel this is right and thought something should be done about it,” said David Sprout, a paralegal for the group. Sprout said he did not know what the inmate was serving time for.”

You…big…dummies.

BOSSIP Exclusive: Issa Rae Explains What Happened With Her Shonda Rhimes ABC Show

Issashonda

Issa Rae Interview

BOSSIP recently caught up “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” creator Issa Rae while the full time funny lady was in Atlanta.

While doing so, the writer and filmmaker who’s developing an HBO comedy pilot, spoke candidly on a previous opportunity that to fans seemingly vanished into thin air.

Issa and television titan Shonda Rhimes were at one point set to team up for an ABC series based on Issa’s “I Hate L.A. Dudes” YouTube series. As of right now the finished product has of course yet to come to fruition so BOSSIP decided to ask why.

Below Issa explains what really happened to the proposed show and dishes on her relationship with Shonda.

We heard that you were doing some work with Shonda Rhimes and ABC based off [your show] “I Hate LA Dudes.” Can you tell us what happened with that?

I was doing a series with Shonda Rhimes and ABC and initially I met with them, a couple of years earlier, I met with Bessie, Shonda’s producing partner, and they called me in – this was during season 1 of Awkward Black Girl – and they just wanted to see what was happening with it. It was great to meet them but I had no interest in taking ABG to network, and they got it.

And then Pharell picked up the second season and we had the Rolling Stone article. Then they called me in again and this time Shonda was in the meeting and I was like ‘JESUS!’ She asked about ABG again and I said ‘if I take it anywhere I would love for it to be cable but just not network’.

She was like ‘ yeah we totally get that. What else you got’? And I pitched “I Hate LA Dudes” and told them it was based on fact. And they said they hated LA dudes too [laughs] and we talked about it for 2 hours!

Throughout the process they were completely understanding of my voice and my vision and they were really patient, helping me to grasp the network model and what to expect. Down the line I learned about ABC being both a network and a studio and they’re not necessarily the same or have the same ideas. They don’t necessarily communicate.

A lot of the notes [they gave] didn’t fit with my vision or [maybe] the network and studio didn’t communicate with each other, so there was a lot of re-writing back and forth. Ultimately because I was so “green”, I took a lot of the notes because I was kind of a pushover. It was my first TV opportunity and I thought ‘I don’t want to mess it up and if they picked up the series, then I would put my foot down’. But you can’t do that; you have to be solid in your vision.

In the end what I turned in wasn’t something I fully believed in and it showed. Ultimately they passed on the project but make no mistake, the relationship with Shonda and Bessie was invaluable. They were so great, there’s still a relationship there.

We’re big fans of Issa so we’re glad to see she’s getting her wish to be on a cable network.

Heckler Explains Why He Threw A Banana At Dave Chappelle

This guy is a f***ing moron

Via HuffingtonPost

A man arrested after throwing a banana peel that hit comedian Dave Chappelle in the leg during a performance in Santa Fe says it was just an act of heckling and that he “thought a joker could take a joke.”

Christian Englander was arrested Monday night on suspicion of battery and disorderly conduct.

The 30-year-old told the Albuquerque Journal newspaper (http://goo.gl/9zoLc7 ) that he threw the banana peel because he objected to Chappelle making jokes at the expense of his friend.

Englander says the toss has been misconstrued as a racial attack on Chappelle, who is black. Englander is white.

Police said after the arrest that Englander appeared to be highly intoxicated. Englander said he’d had a shot of liquor and “definitely felt warm and fuzzy.”

We don’t care if Dave called his friend a “creepy azz cr***er”, doesn’t explain why he had a banana ready to throw at a black comedian’s show.
