Vegan Mother Arrested For Child Neglect
A Florida mom is facing charges of neglect after authorities say she gave her newborn vegan formula.
A new mother is fighting for custody of her son, who she hasn’t been alone with since he was 12 days old, because of her vegan beliefs.
Sarah Markham’s baby was taken from her because she opted not to take him to the hospital when he was losing weight.
Instead, she told investigators she wanted to try feeding him vegan formula.
Now she’s fighting to get him back while she faces criminal charges.
“They’ve kept a child away from mom,” said attorney Mark O’Mara. “My client can only see her child once a week or twice a week because they’re requiring the child be out of county.”
Sarah Markham was arrested in June when her son was less than two weeks old.
He had lost 10 percent of his body weight.
But instead of taking the boy to the hospital under doctors’ orders, Markham wanted to try supplementing breast milk with vegan formula.
Markham is a Seventh-day Adventist, according to an arrest report, and holistic healing is in line with her beliefs.
Channel 9’s Karla Ray asked O’Mara if it rose to the level of child neglect.
“Not even close,” O’Mara said. “It’s absurd. It’s a mom trying to do the best she can, acting as a vegan which she has the entire right to do taking care of her child.”
Markham is set to face a judge on Nov. 12 to fight to regain custody of the now healthy boy while she faces criminal charges.

Kobe Bryant made history Tuesday, setting the NBA record for missed field goals.
The Los Angeles Lakers star set the mark with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter of a 107-102 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. He missed a 14-foot fadeaway jumper from the left side, giving him 13,418 career missed field goals, one more than Boston Celtics legend John Havlicek.
Asked about the record, Bryant, who scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-26 shooting and finished with 13,421 misses for his career, smiled and said he wasn’t aware of it.
“Nah, I don’t follow that stuff, man,” he said.
How does he explain setting the mark?
“Well, I’m a shooting guard that’s played 19 years,” he said, shrugging and smiling. He later added, “Like I said, ‘shooting’ guard, 19th year.”
Bryant, in his 19th NBA season, entered the game 13 misses shy of the record. The 36-year-old guard now stands ahead of Havlicek, Elvin Hayes (13,296), Karl Malone (12,682), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (12,470) and Michael Jordan (12,345).
“I don’t care about it, to be honest with you,” Bryant said. “It is what it is. I remember when I was a kid and I watched Michael shoot 49 times in an NBA Finals game. Can you imagine if I did that and lost? Puts things in perspective.”
Bryant has missed at least 20 shots in 44 games, the fourth-most such games in NBA history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Rest In Peace: Bakery Owner Battling Cancer Commits Suicide In Front Of Husband Amid Dispute With Landlord

The owner of a popular Washington Heights bakery took her own life Tuesday amid pressures from illness and rising property costs….

A beloved Washington Heights bakery owner shot herself in the head in front of her husband Tuesday morning amid health complications and the possibility of losing her storefront.
Shortly after Renee Mancino got to work at Carrot Top Bakery on Broadway, she put a gun to her throat and pulled the trigger, an employee at her bake shop told The Post.
“Workers heard a low ‘pow’ but didn’t think anything about it until they heard the manager screaming, ‘Help me, help me,’” said Natasha Rivera, 28.
The Broadway location’s manager and Mancino’s husband, Bob, were both with the 66-year-old baker in the basement when she fired the fatal gunshot.
Bob broke down on the street as her body was wheeled out of their successful sugar spot, blaming her death on Presbyterian Hospital.
“The landlord killed her. My wife is dead because of those co——ers,” screamed the former NYPD cop, who was married to Mancino for more than three decades.
“Thirty years don’t mean nothing. We paid rent 31 years and you have to open up negotiations? We broke our backs for 31 years. We built this business,” he said.
Bob began crying talking about his wife’s suicide earlier in the morning, saying, “My wife killed herself right in front of me because she couldn’t take it any longer.”Mancino had double knee replacement surgery in January and was recently informed that she had cancer, Bob said. Her physical ailments paired with rent negotiations with the building’s landlord pushed her over the edge.
The Mancinos had already gone through one round of lease negotiations with the hospital back in 2010, when they tried to hike the rent $10,000 — bringing the monthly rent to $15,000.
Carrot Top has been a staple in the Washington Heights community for 30 years, serving up delicious carrot cakes and other baked goods.
Damn shame. 30 years in that neighborhood and the greedy hospital wasn’t giving no f***s. Other reports seemed to blame the suicide more on Mancino’s cancer, which was reportedly very advanced.

Woman Diagnosed With HIV From Use Of Manicure Equipment

A 22-year-old woman was diagnosed with HIV after having her nails done using shared manicure equipment.
Doctors say the case, detailed in a medical journal, has revealed a new form of transmission for the virus.
However the researchers warned that transmission through shared manicure equipment is a ‘very rare event’ and the risks of infection from new sources are still very low.
When diagnosed, the woman was found to have advanced HIV, according to the report in the journal AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses.
But she had none of the usual risk factors for acquiring the virus, which is most commonly caught by having sex without a condom.
It can also be passed on by sharing infected needles and other injecting equipment, and from an HIV-positive mother to her child during pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding.
However, the woman did report having shared manicure instruments years before with a cousin who was later found to be HIV-positive.
Blood analysis suggested the woman contracted the virus around ten years ago.
Further genetic analysis of the viruses from both patients suggested it came from a common ancestor, indicating the possibility HIV was transmitted through the manicure instruments.
Dr Brian Foley, of the HIV Sequence Database at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, said the case should not make people scared of contact with people with the virus, as the risk of infection is very low.

Ocean County authorities say a man was driving drunk along Route 9 in Ocean Township Monday evening when he allegedly hit a pedestrian.
The impact caused the victim to become lodged in the windshield.
Detectives say 33-year-old Marcos Ortega drove more than a mile with the man stuck there until an officer pulled him over.
The victim, a 66-year-old man, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Ortega is being held on $150,000 bail.
