The city’s transformation from crime capital to urban Disneyland is one of America’s great success stories, but a less encouraging narrative has accompanied it. As a new report shows, arrests for petty offenses like turnstile-jumping and pot possession have shot up since 1980, disproportionately affecting young black and Latino men.
The report, released Tuesday by John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, shows that the nation’s largest police force has been arresting more people for misdemeanors, a category that includes low-level crimes, from prostitution to minor drug offenses to dancing in the subway.
Since 1980, the percentage of New Yorkers arrested for misdemeanors has tripled, according to the study. The number of blacks arrested for misdemeanors nearly doubled to 104,659 in 2013, from 56,152 in 1990. Latinos saw the number rise even more dramatically, to 78,733 from 30,885. Police arrested 28,996 whites for misdemeanors in 2013, compared with 21,815 in 1990.
In New York, civil rights advocates have long criticized the police for stopping and frisking disproportionate numbers of black and Latino people. Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in January after promising to reform the practice.
But the new mayor appointed as the police commissioner William J. Bratton, known for his hard-nosed approach to minor offenses. That strategy came under intense scrutiny last summer, after the police grabbed Staten Island grandfather Eric Garner in a chokehold while attempting to arrest him for selling untaxed cigarettes. Garner died soon after. Critics say Bratton’s “broken windows” strategy lands hard on low-income people and people of color.
We really wish they’d stop releasing reports reiterating the obvious and make steps toward change…

Was abuse the reason Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony called it quits in 2011?
In a short excerpt (via People) from her forthcoming memoir, “True Love,” Lopez, 45, recalls the day she revealed her marriage was over and the thoughts about relationships that followed.
The singer was on the set of a photo shoot in July 2011. Things on the outside seemed to be picture perfect for Lopez: She had recently celebrated her seventh wedding anniversary (June 5), her twins Max and Emme were doing well and her newest single, “On the Floor,” had soared to number one around the world. But on the inside, Lopez was struggling with her relationship.
“In a blur of fear and panic, I looked at Benny [Medina] and my mother and blurted out the words: ‘I don’t think I can be with Marc anymore.’ Then I burst into tears,” Lopez writes. “It was out. The thing I feared more than anything in the world. I collapsed into their arms and began to sob.”
Lopez and Anthony publicly announced their divorce on July 15, 2011. “Hardest. Day. Ever,” she dramatically sums up.
In the year that followed, Lopez launched her Dance Again tour, on which she wanted to show the “truth about abusive relationships.”
Lopez never says her seven-year marriage to Anthony was abusive, although she once called their relationship “very Sonny and Cher,” and also opens up about abuse in her past.
“I’ve never gotten a black eye or a busted lip, but I’ve been in relationships where I have felt abused in way or another: mentally, emotionally, verbally,” she writes. “I know what it feels like for your soul to be diminished by the way your loved one is treating you.”
The “Booty” singer’s list of exes include Diddy, Casper Smart, three ex-husbands Ojani Noa, Chris Judd and Anthony and a highly publicized engagement to Ben Affleck.
Lopez says it took her years to learn that abusive relationships fall on the shoulders of both partners. “Because every day that you don’t walk out that door, every day you accept things in your partner and in yourself, is a day that you’re saying it’s okay,” she writes.
“True Love” is released on Nov. 4.

Christina Kelly says her investment-banker husband made her go the extra mile to help him land a client — pushing her into a partner-swap with the business honcho and his wild girlfriend.
The mom of two revealed details of the kinky alleged hookup — and every drug binge, extramarital pool fling and sex encounter in between — in salacious Manhattan court papers targeting her husband, Jefferies & Co. wunderkind Sage Kelly.
Christina Kelly alleges in nearly every page that her $7-million-a-year hubby is nothing but a coke- and Ecstasy-loving, booze-swilling, abusive spouse and dad who lives for seamy sex romps.
Christina, 39, said her husband, 42, was trying to woo Aegerion Pharmaceuticals honcho Marc Beer the night she wound up having sex with Beer — and “sexual contact’’ with his prancing, big-breasted girlfriend, according to the papers.
The former Ralph Lauren event planner said the sex jaunt occurred in a hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in Boston in 2012 after a booze- and cocaine-fueled evening.
“Soon, Sage and I were having sex with each other on one bed, and Marc and his girlfriend were having sex on the other bed,’’ Christina says in her affidavit.
“Then, Marc said, ‘Let’s switch,’ ” she claims in the papers. “Marc suggested that his girlfriend and I have sex with each other.
“Mindful of [Sage’s] goal of securing business from Marc, I felt responsible not to disappoint Marc. So, his girlfriend and I had sexual contact for a few minutes, while Marc and Sage watched.
“Then, Marc’s girlfriend joined Sage on our bed, and Sage and she started to have sexual relations.
“Then, I joined Marc on his bed, and he and I engaged in sexual relations,’’ Christina said in the sworn affidavit.
“Following that evening, Marc Beer has been an important client of Sage and, presumably, a substantial reason for Sage’s enormously successful career at his current investment bank, Jefferies and Company Inc.,’’ she said.
On top of all that, Kelly says her husband puts their kids in danger by being constantly high and bringing drug-use into their home around their two daughters:
She said he once slapped one of the little girls across the face for saying she was afraid she might pee herself — and routinely calls the kids “f–king retard’’ and “f–king idiot.’’
“Mommy, can you please tell Daddy to stop calling me a f–king retard?’’ one of the little girls asked her, the filing says.
And Christina said one of her husband’s pals also “inadvertently left a bag of cocaine on a pool table’’ at the family’s Sag Harbor home — and one of the kids stuck her finger in it. Christina says she stopped the child before she could ingest it.
Christina said Sage was so into drugs that he once hosted “Mushroom Day” in the Hamptons where “he continually ingested [psychedelic] mushrooms throughout the day . . . while the children were present.”
He also urinated and defecated on himself in bed, she said in the papers.
Wild stuff, right? Wonder what else goes on in these circles that wives and girlfriends keep quiet about…

Mike Tyson has revealed he was sexually abused by a stranger when he was a child growing up in Brooklyn.
The 48-year-old said during a radio interview earlier this week that the molestation took place when he was seven.
‘He snatched me off the street,’ the boxing legend said during a visit to SiriusXM’s Opie Radio show on Wednesday.
‘I was a little kid…[he was an] old man.’
‘[He] bullied me, sexually abused me and stuff,’ said Tyson. ‘Never seen him again.’
The father-of-eight said he managed to escape, and claimed it was a one-time incident.
Tyson said he never told anyone, including the police, about the abuse.‘I just went on with my life,’ he said.
When asked by the interviewer whether the event changed him, Tyson answered: ‘I don’t know if it did or not.’
He added: ‘I don’t always remember, but maybe I do but I don’t. I’m not ashamed or embarrassed by it.’
Mike may not necessarily connect the dots, but with a past as crazy as his, this experience had to have affected him…

A Louisiana woman was caught on tape sexually abusing a 3-year-old boy and having sex with a dog, according to police.
Angeline Lodice, 26, was arrested Monday after the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office police obtained several photos and videos of her alleged sexual acts, according to an arrest report.
One of Lodice’s relatives reached out to the 3-year-old boy’s father after receiving photos and videos of the encounter between Lodice and the boy, according to NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.
Lodice said she was the woman in the videos, according to the sheriff’s office. But the 26-year-old said she did not recognize the child because she thinks she was drugged, police said.
Police did not say how Lodice knows the boy or the dog.
Lodice was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Facility. She has been charged with aggravated rape of a victim under the age of 13, pornography involving juveniles, crimes against nature and sexual battery. If convicted of aggravated rape, Lodice could be subjected to a mandatory life sentence.
Interesting stuff being left out here…like WHO taped this and how did the relative get their hands on it???
More importantly…what the hell “drug” makes you sexually attracted to babies and dogs??? She can save that excuse and take a prime spot in her new rightful home — up under the jail. SMH!

The family of a British girl who died while having cut-price plastic surgery in Thailand have revealed that they didn’t know she had gone abroad.
Joy Williams, 23, from Thamesmead, was described as a ‘caring and funny’ girl who was ‘loved by everybody.
She died on October 23 after travelling to Bangkok to have £2,000 buttock augmentation surgery.
Speaking yesterday from his home in Lagos, Nigeria, Miss Williams’s older brother Anietie, 28, said he had been looking forward to her visiting him in Nigeria this Christmas.
He said: ‘We don’t really know what went wrong, we only know what is in reports in the media.
Miss Williams, who was born in Lagos, settled in Thamesmead with her mother Christie in 2007 and had been to Thailand twice before choosing to visit for surgery.
She initially visited the SP clinic, which she found on the internet, on October 14 to have the operation which she hoped would give her a bigger, fuller bottom.
A few days later her wounds became infected and she returned to have corrective surgery to remove the silicon implants.
But she was found dead on the operating table with a three inch-long stitched incision on her tail bone after medical staff found they were unable to resuscitate her.
Thai officials investigating her death believe her operation had been delayed to ensure Miss Williams had not eaten anything beforehand and that as a result the operation began after the clinic’s legal closing time of 7pm.
It is believed Miss Williams had long struggled with her self-esteem and been bullied at school before choosing to undergo an operation on her nose to improve her looks.
While in Bangkok she had been staying at the £11-a-night Vabua Asotel hotel which is used by the clinic as accommodation for its patients.
The doctor who carried out the procedure, Sompob Sansiri, 51, was later arrested and accused of negligence after it was found that he had been carrying out night-time surgery without a licence.
He has now been charged with recklessness causing death and could face 10 years in jail if found guilty.
